I was surprised that there isn't a forum for talking about sharing photos on various social media sites, so I thought I'd create an open thread for this kind of discussion.

And I thought I'd start it off with mention of a fairly new photo-sharing app for Android and iPhone called Pidgeon. (No, I've no idea why it's spelt with a 'd'.) It's free to sign up and use and it's aiming to be a replacement for Instagram. Nice for those of us who refuse to use anything owned by Facebook (sorry, Meta), or anyone else looking for somewhere to share photos and view others' pictures. As it's an app, it could be very useful for sharing something you just snapped with your smartphone. The iPhone app mostly works on iPad, but on my iPad Mini 6 I couldn't assign a photo I was uploading to a particular category as the photo took up the entire screen, and the category selection was below the photo. Perhaps they'll work on this.

When I signed up, there didn't seem to be a lot there. I went back to take a look this evening and in half an hour or so I'm following 13 new people and had to slow down as there's too much to look at. The quality of photos there is generally good, and there seems to be something for most tastes.

Here's how I found out about it:

Slightly OT but you did mention it. Obviously I do not really know but the founder says it is based on the ”carrier pigdeon” (misspelt the same way) however it’s sensible not to call it “pigeon” as that would be impossible to find in searches eg “help with pigeon”. Nobody would be so stupid, it would be like calling an app “Photos” or “Pages” or “Numbers”. Imagine the futility of searching for “help with Photos”.

I tried to upload a 100% jpeg file which was around 10MB yesterday and gave up after 10 minutes or so. I re-exported it at 80% and it was fine. Was that what happened with you, or did it give an error message?

It will not give me any option to upload any photos, so have logged out for a while might check in a few weeks and if the same then uninstall it.

There's been quite a few Instagram alternatives, but none have taken off... there was a lot of talk about an App called Glass last year - whatever happened to that, anyone using it?

I'm not, but I see that they've now released an iPad version. And there's an upcoming web version, too.

I'd forgotten that I'd joined the VERO True Social community some years ago. It's not just for photography, but also art and music. And it seems to concentrate too much on 'brand' for me. Anyway, I got an email from them today. They now have desktop versions for Windows and Mac.

I tried VERO when it launched a few years ago but it just seemed to be full of influencers rather than real photographers that I'd like to follow. I haven't checked in on it since then.

To be honest I'm not using Instagram as much now that I stopped doing my 365 project at the end of last year. I've dropped from posting every day to just once or twice per day but I think part of that is the fact it's winter and I'm not shooting as much due to time restraints.

However, I have started using Flickr again for the sake of a 52 week group which I enjoyed before and like the challenge.
I might take a look at Pidgeon as I'm not a fan of the direction FB/IG/Meta is going.

I have my Google Photos account which has loads of content... And a few bits on my new Flickr account and in the Gallery on my private Blog and also a Gallery on Facebook (not that there's much in it)
