My learned friends,

I have several thousand photos (film negatives) which i would somehow like to convert to digital. Im toying with asking a company to do them but i think this may be a pricey affair.

Have you had any expereince of film to digital scanners etc and is there one you would recommend (or even sell if you no longer have use for it?)

Having done a search and not really finding the answer i will expand on my post a little.

I have over 1000 negative strips each containing the usual 6 frames or so.
There are a fair few snapshots but also a lot of photos from my travels.
I am looking at scanning them at the best quality possible
Time isnt an issue as i will do it over the next months / years
Cost is to be kept as low as possibe hence the home scanner as opposed to sending them to a company.
Budget for scanner is £100 - £150.

most fils are 35mm ( i have slide films but may send these seperately as there are only a handful).


So, is the plustec 7200i the way to go?

Are you still taking film shots or is it purely for archiving your old stuff?

If you can stretch to it I would recommend a secondhand Nikon Coolscan IV or V, they are significantly more than your proposed £150 budget but you could scan all your negs then sell it once you had finished, you would lose little if any of your investment and if you bought carefully you may even make a profit.
 
Thanks heather, but foirgive me if im being think but there is a lot of talk there about flatbed scanners which im not sure if its the right thing.

Looking at the epson vs the plustek they seem completely different types of scanner....im new to this so may be missing something...:bonk:
 
its for archival. any negs i get done now i get on disk.
 
I would strongly recommend going for the Reflecta Crystalscan or even better the Proscan 7200 rather than the Plustek as you might have read in the thread. The Reflecta can be got for a similar or cheaper price, the digital ICE is damn effective, to get the maximum quality out of it takes much less time than with the Plustek (which requires you to scan at 7200 dpi and downsize afterwards to get the maximum quality as it only resolves 3250 dpi - as so each scan takes 15+ mins) and according to review images the density of the Reflecta is much better and my Proscan 7200 can certainly eat into the shadows very effectively.
 
thanks, the reflectas seem to be rarer than hens teeth on ebay....but do get a good review..

The proscan seems to be the best review out of the 2.
