Hey everybody, was recommended this board by one of your users although I do not know what user name he goes by on here. Was wondering if anyone could help/would be interested in my request.

I'm coming towards the end of writing my first full book and I recently got to thinking about the cover. I intend to self-publish if I cannot find a publisher to take me on and if that is the case then I will need a picture to use as my cover. After a chat with the aforementioned user I decided to put a request up here to see if anyone has anything I can use or can possibly shoot something that is suitable.

The story is a post apocalyptic effort based around a boy who is the apparent lone survivor of a devastating plague. He passes the time by wandering the lonely streets of his ramshackle home town by day and hunkering down wherever he pleases by night. The blurb for the book is below if that helps build a picture in your minds eye:

If you were the only apparent survivor of a ravenous worldwide epidemic, what would you do to pass the time and preserve your sanity?

A single survivor wanders a godforsaken landscape. It has been five long years since his life was turned on its head, but against all odds he continues to cling to life.

Every day since the plague has been a battle for survival. With no family and no companion he wanders the empty streets of his desolate home town as a way to pass the lonely days, his familiar surroundings his only reminder of a more normal time. By sticking with little deviation to a daily routine he attempts to retard the erosion of his sanity.

Growing used to his new existence, and never expecting change, how would he react if he knew that, just around the corner, another life shattering change awaits him?

What would you do if you were all alone with everywhere to go?

I have a current cover but I feel I might have copyright problems owing to the fact that the artist used an image from the net and I can't seem to track down the owner in order to ask for actual permission to use. The image is shown below, however, and might give you a few ideas for shots that might be suitable:

The kind of shot that I feel would suit ideally are either:
i) a shot of an overgrown and foggy landscape
ii) a young man with an over packed backpack walking along a run down, abandoned street
iii) a young man with an over packed backpack walking along an overgrown country road
That said, I'm hardly the most creative when it comes to photography so if you have a fantastic idea or can think of something that might fit better then I would love to see what you have/can produce.

At the moment I can make no solid promises about monetary payment as the details of publication are still very much up in the air. You would, of course, be given full credit for the shot on the inside cover.

Hope you lot are interested enough to pop something brilliantly eye-catching up for me that might help me sell some copies and get your photography skills some exposure on the shelves in Waterstones!

We seem to be getting a lot of these lately.

No, others have been told they can come here and get free images for commerical ventures too. :)

No, no, I fully intend to pay for the image. However, owing to the fact that I'm still in the process of finding a publisher/deciding to publish on my own I can make no solid promises. I am, after all, in the same boat as you; I would not want my hard work to go unrewarded and I would never use any image put forward to me without a compromise being reached and compensation set.

If you could offer a guaranteed amount, more when published/sold you may get more responses. As has been said, a lot of people have joined up to request free images lately with no guarantee of payment.
Time and money goes into camera kit, and learning how to use it, and if an image is to be used commercially then people should expect to pay.

What's the going rate for something like this or is it on a person-by-person basis? I obviously came into this totally the wrong way for which I apologise.

No worries, it's a sensitive subject at the moment, with even a long standing forum member doing it. Maybe update your first post (maybe even the first line) to point out you're not after a freebie, as a lot of people may just ignore the thread.

Anyhow, to answer your question

There's a lot of ways of getting an image for the cover.

First, take a look at some of the stock sites. They're not exclusive use, and are very inexpensive, you're probably not going to find quite what you're looking for but it'll give you an idea of stepped payments for non exclusive use.

Searching Flickr, or DeviantArt may throw up something more appropriate, then contact the artist and asking for a usage price.

For a specific piece from someone on here you could offer say £50 (randomly plucked figure btw) for an image, and then a series of stepped payments as the sales go over certain thresholds.

Alternatively, you could offer a higher sum for unlimited use.

Or, if you want to see what a commercial photographer would expect, take a look at the NUJ rates for use in books (it'll make your eyes water...)

If this gets picked up by a publisher, you're unlikely to have much input into the cover image, so you may want to wait and see...

You are a brave person asking for an image on this site without the guarantee of payment - the pro's on this forum get very upset at this sort of request (rightly so IMHO).

Ask yourself this question however - how would you feel if, as a photographer, I said to you that I had a series of images which I felt would make a really good story, but as I can't write, will you write me a book to fit my pictures? Oh, and by the way, I can't guarantee that you will get paid either........would you be interested??

Good luck with the publication of your book anyway and I do hope that you manage to source some good images.

The thing is, I didn't say the owner of the image wouldn't receive a fee, I merely stated that at the moment I couldn't pluck a sum off the top of my head although I am willing to talk about price. I'm not trying to steal images for free; like I said my piece of work is all my own sweat and blood and I wouldn't want to give it away for free myself. Maybe I just didn't word my request properly (rather worrying I guess considering the reason behind my request ;)).

However, on the flipside I would be unwilling to fix a price with anyone on here without seeing a few images that they felt fit my need. As I have said in my following posts, I will pay if I see something suitable and I would be happy to increase the price gradually if the book does well. As such I don't feel that everyone needs to get so precious about the subject. Those not interested need not apply after all.

Also, although it is a long shot, if the book does well there is a chance for the photograph to gain exposure in the media or other avenues which would be of benefit not only to myself but to the photographer, especially if they are not working professionally.

If someone is willing to show some images they feel suitable I would be happy to discuss a price. Again my apologies for the misunderstanding; I'll pop you all a complimentary copy of the book along if it helps mend the rift. ;)

Finally, in answer to your question, I probably would write your story. I love writing, it's something I really enjoy doing and if the pictures had potential I would have a hell of a time putting your tale together. We're all different though.

They do - but there are also an unlimited number of amateurs with egos who want to give their work away - obviously because they consider it of no value.

LEX,

The story sounds right up my street - would love to read when finished. I started a short story about a guy who was trying to solve global warming via some mad experiment and managed to extinguish all remaining natural oxygen and in result, he killed 99% of the population....he has to travel between artifical supplies etc - it's a bit pants but it inspired a character called Walter - here he is :D

Would love to read when you publish (obviously I would pay).

Meet walter :D
