hello all,
could someone please tell me how to get the faded black ring look around the edges of the photo? is it lens or a photoshop thing?

It's a photoshop thing

It's vignetting.
Not 100% how to achieve these, but i know there is an option for it within the Adobe RAW opener. Not sure how easy this is with JPEG's ***

Hope that helps somewhat

You might mean a vignette - which is created in post processing - most programmes can do it.

Alternately you could get a lens hood that's a tad too small, or shoot with a sigma wideangle. :)

yeah im in the process of saving for the siggy 10-20, looks like a great lens!!!

Photoshop, create an oval outline, select inverse, select feather (alter to taste), then darken with levels, or for a white effect lighten.

Its a photoshop filter (although it can be done in ACR as well). Its not immediately obvious where to find it.

Once your image is open in PS. Go to the menu bar and choose >filter > distort > lens correction.

In the dialog box that follows, you'll see a slider on the right to add or remove a vignette.

HTH
