Photo Printer

Hi there,

I am after some advice on a budget photo printer.

I don't know which to look at at all, until now i've only had a cheap HP printer which is all very well for printing documents, but I'd quite like to print some photos at a decent size.

I think I've not really any more than £80-£100 to spend.

Would anybody have some suggestions for me to look at?

I've had about eight Epsons over the past 20 years they are the cheapest to run and you can get cheapo copy cartridges. The difference between Epsons and HP/Canon etc is that the Epson cartridges are basically an ink reservoir this has advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that it is MUCH cheaper because an ink reservoir is much cheaper than a reservoir plus head but the disadvantage is that if something happens to the head (and you cannot fix it yourself) then your printer is dead! If you remember to print at least a head test a week you shouldn't have any problems. I have just bought an R2400 myself so I am still in the Epson league but I have seen some really good results from HP printers recently.

Basically if you are going to use genuine inks then there is not a lot in it price wise.

The other advantage of Epsons is that there are plenty of CISS systems available. I have had a CISS (continuous ink supply system) on my R300 for about 6 months. I am on my second set of ink bottles (each bottle is the equivalent of 14 cartridges) so I have saved a massive amount in total.
 
This is perhaps a bit of a random question but if you were buying a printer now would you go for a4 or a3?

Well i have just bought one and it was an A3+, the R2400
 
noone replied anymore to my post near the bottem but ohwell, this thread might get me some answers :)

what canon pixma does anyone reconmend that will give a professional quality excluding there professional range of inkjets lol
 
I've never fond Epson's clog up, I've 2 at the moment, one of which gets little use and I've never had a clogging problem. And that's without loads of cleaning cycles.
 
jonny go for the canon ip4500 and a set of inks is 35 quid off amazon, probs even cheaper off ebay

You can get a full set of genuine inks from ebuyer for 37 quid, thats cyan, magenta, yellow, photo black (pigment) and normal black.
 
Thanks for all the hints, that give's me somewhere to start looking :) I wasn't sure which (other than stylus photo) were and which weren't photo printers. I will now go shopping around and see which is the best I can afford, I may be back if I need more advice :P
 
I swear i will NEVER EVER get another printer again after the last one clogged up, if you don't use it for a while the ink dries in the head and to clear it, it uses ink to flush it through. But it's not very good at it, so it takes a few goes to get it going again, and once that starts, you have to clean it all the time. Basically all the heads in my Epson printers are clogged up, they are nothing more than paper weight. Yes, the ink is cheap, the print quality is good, but its lifespan is so short you are throwing money away using it, both the printer and the ink it uses to clean.

HP is good, I have am A3 one, but the Ink is expensive, cost £50 to replaces both together. It's because every cart comes with a new head so it will never clog.

Canon is my current favourite at the moment, have a pixma i4200 and its fantastic, huge ink carts, yes it does cost £40 to replace all 5 carts but at least it doesn't clog up, and i've had it 18 months now.
 
Have the Canon MP600, really nice, affordable piece. Check it out on eBay.
