Yes
I'd like to set up a web gallery to showcase some of my photos.

I've been playing around with 500px and their portfolio section isn't bad but I'm wondering whether I'd be better off self-hosting (I already have a server that could be used) or if there are other options I should think about?

Why not set up your own website to showcase your work and stick them on Flickr or 500px. There's nothing to stop you doing both.

But is there a good self-hosted solution thats as nice as 500px?

I guess there's also smugmug to consider as well.

I'd probably still put most things on Flickr but only the really top ones onto whatever portfolio thing I decide on.

Self hosting has many advantages, the main one being that you "own" your own content. I used to upload content to flickr, facebook, 500px etc but there is something about providing a large corporation with "free" content that I feel a bit uneasy about.
