I knew about Photo Mechanic, I had a trial period earlier in the year but I didn't really do much with it..

Well it's come to a point where I am going to take it seriously, I have to sift through thousands of photos weekly and Lightroom makes me want to cry with how slow it can be (sometimes it keeps moving when you stop pressing the key, or if you want to go left instead of right it hangs like it wasn't ready for that kind of decision)

Having watched how easy it is to use Photo Mechanic with Lightroom in this video, I'm very excited to supercharge this part of the process!

One problem with Sony raw files is that they only contain a small preview image, which means you won't be able to view images at the full 100% to check sharpness etc.

Hang on...I'm sure something was mentioned on their support forums a wee while ago...quick search...here we go, a reply from one of Photo Mechanic's software guys...
The Sony a7 R3 ARW raw files have the same 1616 pixel preview as their other previous models. The easy solution is to shoot raw + jpeg. Photo Mechanic will pair up the two files as a single thumbnail and preview, using the jpeg. Now you will be able to see the full image to determine if the raw file is worth processing. My sample a9 ARW files have the same small embedded preview. It would be nice if the Sony engineers would add a full sized preview to the raw files ( Canon and Nikon have been doing this for years now ).

Also, there should be a long awaited upgrade to v6 this year, so I'm not sure how buying now will affect upgrade costs later.

Ah that'd still be a pain as I shoot JPGs to a second card.

I bought it now mainly for on the fly sports stuff which will be JPG only, but I'll see how I get on, I've got a theatre production to shoot tomorrow which will be RAW.

My understanding is that Photo Mechanic simply uses file names to pair up raw + jpg.

So in theory you should be able to ingest both your raw card and jpg card to the same folder, then use Photo Mechanic to browse them combined as a single item.

Once you've completed all your culling of images you can easily delete the jpg files, should you wish to simplify things or free up space.
