Hi guys,I'm only just starting out in photography and was wondering which is the best editing software to use?
Thanks..

There are plenty of good photo editing software I my self use adobe photoshop cs3 and cs5. There are loads to choose from there is gimp, serif photo plus, picasa, Corel paint shop, dxo optics, paint.net, phoxo, to name just a few of course there are more high end editors out there like capture one by phase one. I have also used dxo optics pro 8 and found that very easy to use.

Hi thanks for your reply, out of those mentioned which would you advise to be the best?

Lightroom 5 I use it the most in conjunction with cs5 and cs3 depending on if I am on my PC or laptop. Maybe biased for me but I do like adobe products great software and some great tutorials on here on how to use certain features the software has to offer.

I have a Mac so not sure how easy they would be to get around it?

Ok thanks will do. I'll look into getting Lightroom 5 or maybe Adobe Photoshop then.

Thanks for your help.

Get around what? All adobe products are available for the Mac as well as PC.

Have you considered Aperture? It can be purchased from the App Store for £54.

I have decided to get Aperture, but will wait a few more weeks and see if version 4 is released, there is some talk on the Mac forums that it could be. In the mean time, I use DPP and iPhoto on my Mac and faststone on my PC.

i have a mac and you can download adores lightroom and photoshop for a 30day trial. i personally use apples aperture 3 and elements 9. good luck

Lightroom is compatible with both Mac and PC and does 95% of what Photoshop can do.
I'm on my iPad at the moment so cannot give you the link but if you want some good video tutorials on Lightroom then google Julianne Kost Lightroom 5

Photoshop and Lightroom complement each other, they're not competitors. The lite version of Photoshop is PS Elements.

I think Photoshop is overkill for beginners, and it's very expensive, but it's up to you of course. Personally, I'd be more inclined to go with Lightroom and/or Elements for the time being anyway.

Elements. It'll do pretty much everything you're likely to need as a beginner, it's cheap, there are plenty of tutorials around. The 30 day free trail is a bit of a no brainer. I'd recommend Scott Kelby's book to go with it - trying to learn without any sort of tuition, such as a book or a course (try your local FE college) may result in computers flying through windows! I really wouldn't confuse yourself by trying to learn two systems, such as Elements and Lightroom, at the same time.

Maybe more accurate to say that Lightroom performs 95% of MY editing needs. And i think that i am typical (don't we all!).

That's better. Lightroom doesn't even get close to performing 20% of what Photoshop can do.

I use Serif PhotoPlus X2 which I've had for many years - got it for about £15 at a knock down price from Serif and I've never found the need to change. certainly not to spend vast amounts of money on Photoshop (150 MILLION customer accounts hacked BTW!).

I have tried various trial editions of Photoshop over the years and on all occasions been severely underwhelmed.

No doubt an excellent tool for Pro photographers but for me, no.

And I think it would be quite accurate to say that most users only use about 20% of what Photoshop is capable of doing.

Lightroom with a few plug-ins can do 95% of what Photoshop does at a fraction of the cost.

Agreed. And most photographers only use about 20% of what Elements is capable of doing. And Elements is a tad cheaper than full-fledged Photoshop.

Lightroom with a few plug-ins can do 95% of what Photoshop does at a fraction of the cost.

Agreed again. Photo Suite 8, the Topaz bundle, and the Nik Collection are all great plugins for the price.

No.... it can't. I don't care how many plug-ins you give it... it just can't. Fact. Now stop misleading people.

Sounds like a case of "My mind is made up, don't confuse me with facts."

It does, doesn't it.... I'm glad you admit your mistake then :)

I'm currently demoing Capture One 7, initial impressions are good. They've a sale on at the moment (until Sunday) and the Express version is inexpensive.
