Tonight I remembered about this over a glass of wine. Ooops.
Must be more committed & all.

So week 1: REFLECTION.
I thought about going and taking some creative puddle shots - nah. Cold out there.
I puured more wine and goet the botle stopper (Done for the night). The bottle stopper was shiney.
So the bottle stopper & wine became my victim. Short notice reflection shot coming right up.

your on track, interesting to see how you cope with some of the other themes:thumbs:

An interesting shot and effect  I like it.

Thanks for your comments!
I know this one is a late posting but better late than give up (Photo was taken Saturday mind)

More so, this is not what I planned for Week 2 - I had something comepletely different in mind. But when I found this in a box my parents had left with me before the moved I was somewhat excited by it! So much so I had to go an sit down for a while.

Then I came back and took a few snaps as it became the obvious choice!
WEEK 2 - HISTORY

Don't worry about being late, keeping going is the important thing

That is really great, I love the framing of this, the background colour (bellows??), and the DoF. I can honestly say I am really struggling to find something I don't like;I think perhaps the image may be a little off square (the vertical post at the back looks like it's leaning top to the left) and the reflection in the lens is a bit distracting but to say either of these impact the image significantly would be wrong. It clearly captures history well, especially with your audience here. Overall a stunning image

p.s. do you have any more information on it that you can share?

What a great start. Nice reflection. Lovely sharp image with nice colour and well composed. Great shot for last weeks history theme fits perfectly. Looking forward to this weeks offering .

Thanks for your words Simon
You've highlighted the two things that I was not happy with in this image - and I will be revisiting it to correct those I think. (Handheld, squirming around while being a tad excited is never a good way to use a macro lens!). You are spot on - the background is the bellows.

The history of the camera is incoming, I do know that it belonged to my grandfather on my mothers side (Who I sadly never knew) as he was a photographer. Once I have more information and shots I think I will give this little gem it's own thread.

Great shot, beautifully detailed and right on theme:thumbs:

Sorry I haven't commented before - I've only just seen your post. Welcom to the land of 52-ers. :)

The thing both your shots have in common is making a picture out of what is around the house. The reflections is very 'fish eye' and eye-catching. It made me think this is how the world looks when the bottle is empty. :D

Week 2 is gorgeous. Love the subject and the crop that you've chosen. I could see this on the cover of an auction catalogue! :)

Jean

Lovely shot, it will be interesting to read the history as well. Do you know if it still works?
Thankyou.
By the sound of it there is a fair amount of history, I look forward to it too! As for function - yes it seems like everything still works. The shutter sticks a little on speeds of less than 1/2 a second but the aperture is smooth.

I've taken a few more photos but I ran out of time yesterday! Will have another go over the weekend though :)

Thanks :) I'm still getting into looking at all the 52 threads - should subscribe to them all really!

Thankyou for your compliments
So far both my shots (And week 3 it seems too) have been taken with my new macro lens around the house. I'm finding that even the most mundane objects can make for interesting and exciting close up shots so for the most part I think I may continue the theme.

re: the bottle... yea, I kept having to top the glass up... :naughty:

I really like your History shot, and like you I'm finding it hard to keep up with all the threads ;)

I love the Dof and the crispness of the image, well done :clap:

Superb shot, and what an interesting historical item

Posting Week 3 now - be back to reply proper as I just edited the title and dinner is ready!

A Tough topic.
I'm not sure how well I portrayed this one. The idea was to show a mix of learning old & new. I sort of like it but I really can't help thinking I could have done it better. Only I don't know how. Suggestions welcome either as a reshoot or reprocess.

How the hell did I miss these :(

Ok catch up time:

1) Great reflection and worth a few looks :) Hope the wine was nice :D

2) Absolutely stonking shot! Detail, composition, lighting = lovely!

3) Several elements all working well together, great B&W and great detail and dof!

3 Good 'uns - each spot on regarding the theme!

Sorry its taken a while to find them! :D

interesting stuff have you tried taking pictures with it?
Sorry, no. I know mechanically it does work but I wouldn't know where to start in actuyally using it. The back is a plate arrangement that I've never seen before!

Thankyou very much
It is quite hard to keep up. I think I'm going to have set aside an evening a week just to look at all the 52's (I think I subscribed to all the threads)

Nice start ...love to see more of that camera btw, what a wonderfull piece of machinery it looks like.
More please.
THanks!
Definitly on it's way - in fact I may have a thread ready later :)

Hey, don't apologise, I don't think I've found them all yet!

The wine was very nice thankyou :D Seems to be a theme that has accompanied every 52 shot of mine so far!
THanks for your comments

This works really well in B&W and the DoF is good too.

You say you've subscribed to the threads, does that make it easier to work out which ones you've replied to and which ones you haven't?

Great shots there  I think you're showing a mix in your learning one

I like the DoF in the third as well as the B&W conversion, I also like the idea behind the image, it's vey clever.

When you say you think you could have done better I take it there are elements of the picture you don't like, what to you think they are and how do you think you could improve them?

Nice close focus shot with DoF working well to focus attention and B&W suits it really well.

Not even slightly. Which is why from now on I will post my image and then view and comment on all the others in one day at the end of the week (Sunday, in fact :)

Great shots there  I think you're showing a mix in your learning one
Thanks

3 great shots - keek up the good work - looking forward to reviewing your full 52 in time :)
I think in time we will all look forward to reviewing everyone. I know I do. Is anyone else putting theirs in a web gallery?

Richard, I think you've illustrated 'old' and 'new' learning very successfully. Like Simon, I wonder in what way your would have liked to change it?

Look forward to seeing your week 4. :)

Jean
Jean & Simon - you both asked in what way I would like to have changed it. I sat on this and thought about it for a while. The reason I had to think is I didn't actually know. I just felt the subjects in the image didn't gel together too well. I guess the fact this is my first 'still life' shot of straight household items (And an old/special book) and I'm really not used to them.
On reflection I don't think I could have done anything differently (That I hadn't already tried in the huge number of shots/angles I tried. Oddly enough I was shooting for about an hour and this was the second to last shot.
Thanks for asking, it made me think!

Damn this was a tough theme. So tough I enlisted help from my canine companion, Tippy Lurcherbeest himself.

Suprise is an emotion, so as such I spent a lot if time thinking about what is suprising and how I could reflect this. It was in this thought session that I got a suprise - in the form of a pouncing on by a hound. One minute I was looking for something by the bed, I ducked down and beastie thought this would be a fine opportunity to play. He leapt from the floor, landed on the edge of the bes and shoved a cold wet nose in my face.

Hard to illustrate, damn right. But with the help of Mr Penguin (Who needs a wash) and an excitable hound I had a go anyway.

I'm going to post my setup too, as this was the most technically challenging shot so far - and I swear it looked better in my head when I was planning it!
40D, Tokina 12-24 manual focus using approx hyperfocal attempts. Fast shutter speed (and High ISO) as shot was about 50/50 daylight/flash balance.
Wireless ETTL flash courtesy of my 550 EX & ST-E2
Tripod, cable release. Impeccible timing.

Hi Richard

Oh boy, were you brave! What a difficult shot to pull off. I always think Lurchers look calm and laid back. You've proved me wrong.

I take my hat off to you for pulling off manual focus on this. You've caught his expression beautifully, and his eyes are really pinned to the penguin - I hope he got his just rewards for such co-operation. I think Surprise has been the most difficult - so far - and you've pulled off a real live action shot. If I was being really picky, I suggest losing the reflection (Tippy's ear?) from the picture in the background, but I know how difficult it is to work in such confined spaces, and you can't control every aspect. The amazing timing more than compensates, imo. :)

btw - Did penguin survive the surprise? :D

Jean

Wow what action shot...

That must have been so difficult...well done Sir

I love the Learning shot and would have beenhappy to have taken it myself , great DoF and the elements balance out well and the B&W conversion really works.:clap:

And the surprise shot, Spartacus says it all :clap:

I'm looking forward to keeping up with this (even if I'm a week behind with my comments sometimes.

Well done Richard

sorry only just catching up with some of the threads. This is really a lovely shot, and exactly the reason I am trying to master better photography. (so I can get shots like this of my dogs)

well done that man! :clap::clap:

Oooh good surprise shot Richard!!!

Poor bloody penguin :D Spot on with the timing and lighting!!!!

The Great Ricardo - the person whose shots inspired me to take up photography in the first place and the one who introduced me to TP! Fancy meeting you here

Are you going on the WL Feb dog walk at Swithland woods? Some great photo opportunities there.....;) It'd be lovely to see you and Tippy again (and pick your brains for tips, hints and practical help!)

Richard that's a superb shot, perfect timing, superb focus...

save the penguins.....
No penguins were harmed in the making of this shot...

Wow what action shot...

Thanks. I had a lot of misses to get the few hits

Thanks for your comments on both of them. I think the learning is growing on me a bit, now it is a bit in my memory I can't remember clearly how clumsy it felt!

Thankyou Jean!
Lurchers are nearly calm and laid back. If you want I'll stick up a thread that will thoroughly debunk that myth for you

I chose this shot out of the ones I took because of the eye contact - so I'm glad you picked up on that. If I were to take the shot again the picture would be off the wall. I spotted so many elements that I should have picked up on - I shot this over 3 days so I should really have reviewed each day rather than review them all at the end!

And yes, penguine survived. tippy looks afte rhis toys, that penguin is 1 year and 1 month old and still squeaks!

Thankyou! You will get a lot of satisfaction from learning to photographyour dogs - I know I do

Thanks :)
I have to admit a lot of luck in this shot. Lighting was just open window and the 550 doing what it does best. I just set myself up and had a game of 'pounce' with him!

Alison! Hello!
Didn't know you still posted here, got some shots to show me then?
PM me the details of that walk and I'll let you know

Richard that's a superb shot, perfect timing, superb focus...

Yes, I'd love to see the link. I think lurchers have so much character. :)

It's amazing that a dog that excited doesn't wreck toys in 5 minutes, let alone over a year. :)
