Well here I am, no way do I feel up to a 365/6 but definitely going to give the 52 my best shot!

I'll change the title once I have posted the picture itself and in the meantime good luck to all the others taking part!!

To try and structure myself I've decided on some rules for myself.

Donnie's Rules

1. RESHOOT CARDS
If a RESHOOT card is pulled I will RESHOOT a previous theme and shoot the new theme also picked out.

2. JOKERS
I'm not going to use any, simple.

3. PICTURES
I will give myself some latitude on this.
I intend to shoot that weeks theme that week, i.e. before the following week's theme is announced.
However, I will allow myself a one week leeway on this on the offchance something comes up where I cannot do so, e.g. holiday or any unforeseen circumstances.
If I go over by more than one week I will penalise myself by shooting 2 variations per theme until I have caught up!

4. EXIF DATA
I will link my images so that the exif data can be viewed, thereby allowing others to analyse the shot more closely, or to learn what sort of settings I used to achieve said shot.

5. CRITIQUE
I will self critique when I post the picture but very very much welcome and expect critique from TP Members.

Welcome to the madhouse Paul...like the way you've set out your rules . look forward to seeing your shots & ....Good luck , have fun

Cheers :-) Don't be too hasty posting piccies I would say.

I had one idea last night but by this morning have 5 but have narrowed it down to 2 to concentrate on then will pick my preferred and post it. :-)

Hi Paul - good luck with it all. Hope I can be as disciplined as you for the whole 52 weeks.

Looking forward to the pics - Graeme.

OK, managed to get a picture earlier today as it's looking less and less likely that I'll be able to do my first choice as it's weather dependant, though there is a chance of getting it done tonight, well, about 4am in fact :-/
However, to keep my motivation up and ensure I abide by my own rules here is my image for critique.

If you have an exif viewer you should be able to see the exif if you are interested, if not, either get one for your browser (google it) or click here to see the exif on my flickr.

Hi Donnie, Nice photograph, we must have a very similar mindset. I also chose a magnetic compass placed on a map for this theme

Thanks chaps :-)

Yes Nick, I think quite a few of us have used the compass / map idea, probably due to the weather more than anything :-) I bet the summer shots will be much less indoors based :-)

Hi Donnie

Liking your start image for the project....right on theme ....good colors & focus
The pencil bugs me a little...probably my OCD kicking....you obviously spent time getting it to lay straight along the line of the map...but it seems uncomfortable to me ( can a pencil be uncomfortable ?...that doesn't sound quite how I intended )

Look forward to seeing your next 51 shots...good luck & keep up the good work

Right well, had an idea for this that didn't pan out as I'd need some proper studio type lighting to get it done and do it justice and as I don't own anything other than a couple of table lamps ......

As "luck" or "fate" or whatever would have it though, something came in this mornings post which certain invoked genuine fear into me :(

Still, I'm on the ball about it now and have got my ducks in a row.

Great interpretation Paul, that would certainly cause me a few palpitations at the very least. Good take

Direction : It fits the theme... I wonder about the pencil though... it seems a little too contrived in that position next to the compass...

Fear : that works, and fits the theme, good use of DOF

I found this one very difficult as I didn't just want to take an obvious shot, the whole idea for me is to push myself and try and find some creativity

But Sigh pretty much beat me and because of that and my own rules I have had to penalise myself and shoot 2 of the theme!

So, here's the first one where I come back from the weekly shop to find my tyre flat.

It's a pretty straight forward shot really but I'm not very happy with it to be honest, I was using on camera flash and while it's not too harsh I do think it's all a bit flat (no pun intended) :cuckoo:

My penalty shot, and it came to me on the spur of the moment after weeks of thinking about the previous one, is of a pub that I frequented in my youth when I was a student nurse, lot's of good memories but now is one of about 5 locals that are either shut or, in one case, demolished :'(

Thought I'd take the opportunity of a few traffic trails too to give it more character.

Hi Paul can't believe i haven't been here before

Direction - bang on theme and nicely taken

Fear - think we'd all be a bit fearfull if that dropped through the door

Sigh - doesn't really do it for me, it looks a bit dark and yes you're right flat

I like the take on sigh with the car.

I have to say when I first looked at the pub I thought it was a sigh because you couldn't get across the road cause of the traffic. But then I read your description. That is a sigh. Well done.

Whilst I see the idea of the flat tyre, I'm afraid the lack of strength of the on-board flash has made the lighting drop off too much

Yeah Im not happy with the first sigh at all, the flash just didn't work right for me:thinking:

I'm at least glad to see that everyone agrees that it's not a great shot in the end, like I said, once I got it out of camera and onto the computer I realised it didn't come out as well as I'd hoped.

I rushed it a bit due to being behind and the fact it was blinking cold

I did have a slave flash too behind the flat tyre which I was hoping would have concentrated more light there to accentuate it, however, it's not worked properly at all. It's a new flash to me so that's not helped either, ie my not being familiar with it yet.

Still, it's all a learning experience

Yep, the pub was a great one in it's day, to be fair it's got more paint on it now than then LOL.

It had a great atmosphere being right opposite the hospital where we all trained as nurses but it all started to die off when the hospital got rid of the student accomodation :-(

Direction - Nicely taken but the pencil spoils it to an extent imo, Just a bit too new looking and placed,
Fear - Nice dof etc and certainly on theme
Sigh - I didn't initially see the link to sigh as the tire isn't that prominent, a bit of a tweak and it could be a good one though.

Hi Paul, a good start to your 52. I really like
the DOF and focus point on your fear shot  I like the idea behind your first sigh image but I agree with the critique about it. With the description I think the second shot works well. With the shot being taken at distance you don't really get the feel that the pub has been shut down, although I am looking at this in my phone so that could have something to do with it  I do like the inclusion of the lights trails, something I really want to try.

Look forward to seeing the rest of your 52.

Photo 52 - 2012 - Week 4 - Sweet by Donnie Canning, on Flickr

Shot on A4 paper lit from behind by a table lamp diffused with baking paper, then colour corrected.

Also used 2 small folded bits of A4 as reflectors to get some light on the side and in front.
