I'm looking to upgrade my phone and was wondering what to upgrade to. There's so much on the market these days that it's all pretty confusing. I know that I don't want a humungus phone. Obviously would like a good camera. I like the iPhone 11 but it has only a 12mp camera as opposed to the new Samsung's that have way higher megapixels.

Thanks for any advice

Welcome. I don’t know much about telephones with cameras, but first of all you have to decide what subjects you want to photograph, how you want to show them (prints, other phones, computers), and if you want the camera to do all the settings or do you want to learn how to change different controls.

Pixels aren't everything, and most phones seem to give pretty good results. I've only got an iPhone X, which is around 3 or 4 years old, but I find it pretty good. The iPhone 11 should be absolutely fine for you. Pixels are not everything and oftentimes the cutting edge features are useless in real life. If you check out some reviews of the Samsungs S20 ultra zoom, the result beyond 3x zoom are total crap..

It will depend on the preferred operating system - Android or Apple (iOS) - and budget. If you give an indication of these, you will get some helpful suggestions I expect.

If you're an Apple user but don't want a large handset then the obvious model is the SE. Don't worry about megapixels - beyond a certain point on this kind of device they're only a marketing tool.

700 quid will buy a really nice compact to go with the phone you have and the compact will take better pictures. Only slight down side is the extra bulk.

I think you have to weigh up how many photographs you'll use it for against using it as a phone. I looked at dozens of phones and went with the latest Nokia. What a pile of s### that was. I ended up back with Apple and an iPhone 11 plus that just does what it says on the tin.
I have nothing against Android phones it's just my personal preference.

Why was it a pile of crap? Did it not make phone calls then? I have a Nokia 3100 as my main phone to use for business and personal. It sends texts, it stores peoples' numbers, it makes phone calls. Bloody brilliant, the battery lasts me over a week too, maybe 3 or 4 days if I spend all day talking on it. The camera alongside it is a D4s, takes better pictures than any phone!

Megapixels are completely irrelevant.. Ignore it.

Unless you are printing billboards, which I doubt.

It was a Nokia 7+

dreadfull battery life, dreadful signal. Slow as hell, rubbish camera. Too long to charge, bulky. Need I go on.
As for your Nokia 3100 probably the last fantastic Nokia phone but hardly up to date, wouldn’t run the apps I need for my job so wouldn’t fit the bill.

Thank you all so much for the info there's just so much out there to choose from. I've had one iPhone and the rest have been android. It's not because of liking one better than the other. As I always just get the same phone as my husband now I remember why!

I have Olympus om-d e10 M3 so just the phone I would like to upgrade. It will be for everyday pictures really of my son to send to family, pictures of the dog and whatever else if out on a walk and don't have my camera

If you are happy not to have the very latest model, you can save a fair amount with a SIM only plan and pick up a capable handset such as a Huawei P20 Pro. Came out in 2018 so should be good value now and has a well reviewed camera system.
