Apologies if this is a REALLY stupid question. Feel free to mock me.

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S4, and I am due for an upgrade at the end of the month. When I got the S4, upon start-up, I created a Google account/Gmail etc as I didnt already have an existing one. I plan on sticking with Android, as I much prefer it over iOS.

My question is, when I turn on my new Android phone, im assuming that I will be asked to do the same thing (sign in using existing or create new Google account), and if I sign is using my existing account, will I have everything on the new phone without having to faff? Contacts, music etc etc?

Cheers

Nick

Everything that's attached to your Google account and saved/backed-up to the Google cloud will transfer to the new phone (but will have to download from your account).

Anything saved to the SIM will transfer with the SIM.

If you've only saved your contacts/emails/music/etc. to the phone memory (and you haven't enabled the Google backup feature) then it won't transfer.

Cheers. As far as I can tell, I dont have any contacts saved to Sim, and have the back-up to Google option checked in the settings, so hopefully will be good to go then. photos and videos are all saved to Micro SD, so hopefully I wont have any problems.

Thanks again.

You could check on the web to see what Google has backed up. Login to google using the account you created on the phone, and see what it's got under contacts for example. Having the "backup to Google" switched on means that things "belonging to that account" should be backed up. Contacts don't not necessarily "have" to belong to that Google account.

<mock> Didn't you know that? Everybody knows that!</mock>

Ahh yes, good shout, thanks. Ill take a look.

Nicely mocked :D

You might find that once Google populates your new phone that your Contacts will be messed up with either the first name only or the surname only (and doubled up if you also keep them on the sim).

Also any other info in your contacts file such as addresses etc may have gone walkies.

Blimey...really? That sounds a bit poo to me. I suppose i was just hoping it would be a seamless exercise being as it was Google/Andoid to Google/Android. I do remember having similar issues to what you have described when I moved from iOS to Android, but I kind of expected that.

I guess I should just make sure my contacts are as 'clean' as possible before I switch over, and keep my fingers crossed.

Cheers

Getting a new Android phone is a bit like magic. I was amazed how painless it was.

I've never had a problem with my contacts syncing correctly from the google cloud to a new phone when I have upgraded, all the data has been in the correct order.

What phone are you planning on upgrading to?
I went sim only last year as there was nothing that I really wanted but my S3 is now starting to show it's age, especially with the size of the screen.
My upgrade is due in April and I can't decide which phone to get.

At the moment (due to the HTC M9 coming out), im actually looking to get the M8, as there are some good deals about.

I transferred from android to android years ago and it was painless. IOS and Android have it sussed. Once you sign in to your google account, it will bring down various settings including wireless keys and start to install apps you had on the old device

Likewise, it was trouble-free when I last did it >2 years ago.

just a quick update...in case anyone gives a s*** :D

Well, I had the HTC one M8 delivered, turned it on, signed in with existing google account, faffed about with other crap it wanted me to agree to do etc. I just have to concur with the above...it works on pure sorcery. I didnt have to do anything with pictures (all on micro SD), music was all there, contacts were all there, dowloanded apps were all there.

Technology is great (y)

Ah I'm glad you've posted... What's the phone like? Especially camera quality?.. I've been looking at this one and tempted..

I havent done too much with it at the moment, T. The quality looks ok to me (for what id want it for). A lot has been made of the fact its 'only' 4 mega pixies, but they are apparently HTC's 'Ultra' pixels which are supposed to perform better in low light. Ive taken a few full HD videos of the little'un legging it around the front room, and again the quality seems good. There are a load of the standard, tacky 'effects' in the photo editor as well, and the panorama function seems to work pretty well.

Overall pretty pleased with it. The HTC Sense OS is great to use, and it feels good in the hand. Its 90% aluminium so is obviously heavier than the Galaxy S4 ive upgraded from, but it feels nice and solid, real quality...really like it (y)

We rolled out about 50 x HTC M8's for a new client - and I had to say they are pretty impressive.

Camera is very good on it. I dont think your would be disappointment with it.

I personally find it a bit too big though.

It is quite big, yeah, but ive got quite big hands :D

Yeah the ultra pixies are kinda confusing which is why I want to be sure before I change. I'm coming from iPhone 4s and I think I want the bigger screen although phone shop has rated the Xperia z3 compact so I'm torn

Yeah, the Z3 does get good reviews. Fully waterproof, good camera, smaller and lighter than the M8. It wasnt one I considered when I was looking to be honest. I think the Z4 is going to be released soon, so you could find some good deals on the Z3 and Z3 compact. Im guessing (hoping) you have much smaller hands than me, so the M8 might be a tad on the big side for you...BUT, there is also the HTC one Mini II, which is basically a mini M8. Depends what you want it for really. Although the M8 has a good camera, it wasnt really my biggest consideration when choosing, as I generally always carry a normal camera with me all the time anyway. It was the big screen, excellent sound (Boomsound speakers), and the build quality that attracted me.

I got the Z3 compact and for me it is the ideal size, despite my eyes wanting a bigger screen. It (the screen) seems plenty bigger than the iphone 5 and fits in my pocket - bigger phones were just that bit TOO big.

I think I saw somewhere that Marc @fabs now has the M8 also. If thats correct, he will have been using it for longer than me, so might be able to tell you more about what its like to use on a daily basis...

Yes it's my eyes wanting a bigger screen although I don't have a problem I just thought it'd be nicer.
I'm coming from the 4s which is smaller so I guess it would still be a touch bigger and z3 was a nice contract price :)

Lol yes I do not have man hands at all! I'm coming from sim free so price has a lot to play in it as I didn't really want a big contract again unless the phone was super awesome!
If I had a compact of sorts to carry around with me camera wouldn't be as much of an issue :)

Yep, had it over a month now. Fits in trouser & jeans pockets without issue, loving the big screen as well.
