Week 1: Sin

Lust....

Week 1: Sin

I chose 'Lust' and adapted an existing shot for it. Usually I'll shoot a new photo, but I thought this edit from an earlier shoot would fit the bill!

This was shot with just a gridded beauty dish firing across Joel from camera left. I deliberately de-personalised the shot a little as I felt the face might be a distraction from the theme.

Hope you like it and thanks for looking.

Phil

Hi Phil,
Good start to your 52. The negative space works well here, with your model looking into it. The lighting is very effective too, highlighting the subject just enough.
I am sure it is bang on theme, I couldn't possibly say for sure though ;)

Good to "see" you again, I remember you from the 52 of 2010. Iain

Hi Phil :)

Sin - I too guess that must be on theme :D

Great lighting and a very effective crop, thanks for putting your set-up for the shot too

Thanks both - great to be back among the 52'ers!

The intention of the shot was supposed to be a double meaning - some may find the subject matter the object of lust, but others might assume the subject matter had lustful intent!

Nice to see a picture of me lol I like the empty space and the lighting on the model not lust but envy for me so yes sinfull lol

I don't recall sighting a model release, so please remove this photograph :D

Great lighting, negative space and I like how I'm, :D, the model is orientated.

Think I'd prefer the Lust wasn't the

Strong start

Cheers.

excellent start I don't think theres much I could tell you about taking pics but nice negative space and perfectly placed model i have no idea what a gridded beauty dish is but you used it well

Would agree with is. Love the lighting, not so much the subject personally. I didn't realise people like this really existed! :)

Right - who can explain to me why it's only the chaps who have commented so far??

Do we presume the ladies have looked in with the intention of commenting... and gotten distracted :naughty:

The lettering looks a bit pink / light for the image to me.. maybe a slightly darker / browner colour may match the subject?

I think the shot definitely fits the bill - could be Lust or Envy I imagine. I like the space, anonymity and lighting. The only thing I would maybe change is to either have the bottom inch or two chopped off or darken the groin area but leave the lighting on the outside edge of the leg.

I like the idea of editing an existing shot instead of shooting a new one - seems to be cheating a little but these days I enjoy the editing side of things as much if not more than the photography so if I get stuck might copy you :D

Phwoar! Think I have my favourite

Seriously though, aside from the subject - great image!

Hey Phil - I didn't make it through 2010 so back again but with a different slant :)

Good take on the theme and you can tell you know your way around lighting. The chopped off head works well and (IMO) you did the right thing in removing to get rid of the distraction. I was going to ask what that was just above and to the right of the groin, when I realised it was fluff on my monitor...

The text and border is my only real crit, but that's very subjective. I'm guessing you sampled the colour from the image and it's not adding anything for me. Like I said though - subjective. Good luck with the rest of your year!

Ian.

That is a really well done image - I look forward to seeing how your tread progresses

LOL!

That's a great image there, but I think it would be better with the full face in.

Two minds about this - I was go for de-personalization.

Many thanks - we must shoot again some time.

A beauty dish is a large (70cm) dish on the flash head that gives a softer light than a (harsh) plain reflector, but not as soft as a softbox. The grid controls the spread of the light.

Great shot and bang on theme (the wife tells me) :-)

:D

Yeah - and he's a qualified lawyer and has his own charitable foundation - makes you sick!

I actually sampled the colour from the subject, although I'm not 100% about the colour.

Great take on the theme, lighting looks good, and negative space works here, great start

Thanks!

Cracking shot, i like the negative space also.

:p

I prefer to shoot a fresh shot, but this one just felt too appropriate to the theme. I think the groin area adds to the lustful aspect.

Many thanks - I have his mobile number.....

Many thanks - yes I did sample the colour - I think I like the text there, but I might prefer a different colour.

I'll just echo clairec's comments :)

fab lighting and crop.. great use of negative space.. fits the theme perfectly! :naughty:

Hi Phil

I have no crit , at all even a little bit......thats way above anything I could produce....TOP WORK mister  & it's cetainly making me think of sinful things......do ya have his number

I do have his number, yes! Actually it was a fairly simple shot to produce - strong sidelighting and a black background was all that it needed!

Week 2: Season

A winter portrait of a stranger

p1383946650-6.jpg

Week 2: Season

I decided to go for a wintry portrait of a stranger. I stood in a church yard near the town centre of Northampton and watch as people wandered by. As I saw this lady suitably wrapped up I asked if she would pose and I put her in front of a snowy patch of ground.

Hope you like it and thanks for looking.

EXIF: Canon EOS 5D Mark II, f/4 @ 200 mm, 1/200, ISO 200, No Flash

Beautiful shot - great colours in the scarf and coat - and wonderful eyes and smile - I bet you made her day!

A lovely portrait Phil, with everything positive as already stated. A double thumbs up for having the nerve to ask a stranger more that my nerve would have allowed. Great result.

'Portrait of a stranger'.......:help:

I never have the nerve to do this for some reason!

Cracking photograph and bang on theme. Lovely eye contact and smile. Liking the autumnal colours. OOF BG but visible trees.

Cheers.

Great portrait shot. The background is suitably blurred so as not to cause too much of a distraction. Lovely contrasting colours and you've caught a natural expression. Nice & sharp and a steady hand for 1/200 at 200mm.

The only tiny tiny crit would be the loss of her left shoulder. Maybe having her body at more of an angle with her face turned towards the camera would have worked better. It's being really picky though :)

Ian.

its a nice enough portrait shot her make up a bit odd or is that really the colour of her face

I agree another great shot nothing to say about that other than i really like it!

Many thanks - it was easy - I said 'I'm doing a challenge and want to take a picture of you for a wintery shot' -she said 'ok'!

Beautiful portrait and lovely smile although her teeth are so white they dominate her face a tad.

Maybe I over whitened them a little - they were a bit yellow in real life.

Made her day? I bet she made his! :D

Cracking effort, and the photo isn't too bad either

Thanks!!

Thank you for the comments - I agree & would have done so with a model, but with a quick snap of a stranger I think I'd have lost her if I'd try to direct much.

Yeah - it looks better before export in Lightroom - I've tweaked it a little and re-exported.

Can't add anything more than what's been said already but I like the shot
Don't know as I would have the cahunas to ask to take a photo of a total random stranger...given you did that I hope you got her number too...so you can get in contact to send her the photo of course :)
