Peter Hurley - Free and funny speedlight portrait training video

Glad you enjoyed it. I thought he was both funny and pretty humble about his success.

Sorry do you mean the constant "but you are being photographed by Peter Hurley comments"

I thought he was to some degree taking the mickey out of himself with those and encouraging the audience to laugh with him. I think he was flustered by the training, he had not used the camera before, he could not find stuff in the menu etc and the audience had to help him which was funny and he was laughing at himself. I have seen him in other stuff where he has said despite his front, he gets really nervous doing training sessions. I think he showed some really interesting stuff in the session though.

He can come over as too full of himself sometimes, but I think quite a bit of it is front, as he does say quite humble and vulnerable things as well. On the whole I give him the benefit of the doubt and his intent in this training so show low end basic kit can be used to get great photos is a good and useful one. Its a refreshing change from RockStar photographers pushing only the most expensive gear. I respect him (and B and H) for that.

Some good info in there, thanks for the link. Liked the theory but thought the photographer was a pain in the butt. :(

Enjoyed this too.

Thanks for the link.

I thought he was not funny at all and found the video a total waste of time, well that's my opinion anyway.

What are you thoughts on the results?

Looks good, a even light with just enough shadows. not sure about the catchlights in the eyes.

The catch lights look ok until you get the eye straight on, the triangle looks like it belongs on an alien.:)

Had a quick go tonight, inspired by the video!

Nice photo - your girls look really happy too. Its interesting you had a go with the softboxes. I wondered myself, but I don't have enough strip boxes. I like the bigger working space you show they give - the gap in the middle of them. When I have seen Peter Hurley on other youtube videos, he had a much bigger working gap than he did in the demo I recommended.

Hurley used to use Kinoflos before "own branding" but the price of those is even worse I suspect as they are used in the movie and TV industry for set lighting.

Lots of Hurleys stuff has the triangles in the eyes, It makes the eyes very bright and lively looking and he likes lots of colour to show.
People argue til the cows come home about catchlights. I dont think there is a right or wrong as what appeals is so very personal to an individuals own taste.
Your results have encoraged me to have a go when I have enough kit.

They were 22x90 cm strip boxes.

They were 30 quid on Amazon.
Sounds a good deal. I will look them up. Bit spent out at this time of year though so futher purchases will have to wait until after new year. I dont like to mention photo gear if people ask what I want for Christmas as it does not seem right to ask for it, as photo kit tends to be more than I would want to ask people to spend - and I am already fully stocked with reflectors! :-)

I have started another thread here
https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/free-studio-training-videos-post-your-links.641696/

in the hope more people will post training video links up. I have put a couple more headshot ones up on it.

I reckon you could do this with just two lights with a well placed reflector below.

Good idea with the thread!

So I had another go with this set up, this time I had two speedlights fired at the background and I did some shots where the background lights were turned off.

I've posted them in the people and portraits section.

I have to say I'm actually really liking this set up!!
