The field of view may be cut off with circular hoods, particularly on wide angles! So they cut the hood to fit the edges of the viewfinder.....I think that makes sense!
It depends on the lens what type of hood it needs.
Zoom lenses often need the petal hood to avoid vignetting at the wider end of it's range as the others have said.
Primes usually have a full hood, but they are still designed for their particular field of view.
