but I cannot for the life of me see how one places a photograph into a thread. When I click Insert Image above it only allows me to insert a web address.

Upload your images to a hosting site or your own webspace and insert the url of the image you wish to show.

have a look at photobucket, upload your iamges and then copy the img code, paste into the message and bingo

Usually you have to upload your images to somewhere like photobucket then once they are in there copy the link that is atached to siad image and then paste it into the thread, if that makes sence.
