Iv done a bit of googling and am none the wiser , if I talk pictures of people how do I stay within the law ? Talking street I suppose
 
Anyone in a public place not on private land is fair game.:) It all depends on how bold/brave you are. Street photography can be very rewarding. You can try and take shots using a medium size zoom from a distance or get in close with a 50mm. THIS is a good read.

If there is a child in the photograph and:
  • You did not obtain permission
  • The child is identifiable
  • There is no public interest debate
you may open yourself to a civil claim against you if you publish the photograph.

I know that Associated Newspapers were going to appeal the decision made in their case with Paul Weller but I haven't heard anything further.

This is incorrect.

There is no law prohibiting photographing children in a public place.

Here is the only piece of legislation that prohibits the photographing of children:

You're reading something into my post that isn't there. I didn't say there was a law against photographing children in public places. The case of Weller v Associated Newspapers established that if you PUBLISHED the photograph in certain circumstances you may open yourself to a civil claim. The boundaries of that decision have yet to be clarified. I hope that Associated Newspapers do appeal as at present the position seems ludicrously wide and open to abuse. Does it only apply to celebrities' children ? How widely does the photograph have to be published ? and so on ...
 
And in addition the photos in the Weller case were taken outside of the UK AFAIK. I'm unsure of the effect (if any) of that. If I remember JK Rowling bought and won a similar case a few years ago
