i want to start taking more pictures of people but how do you go about it? i want to ask people but i feel pretty rude asking stangers if i can take their photo. also i wouldnt want the picture to be posed, im not really into posed pictures. should i jus try n get a sneaky pic? or just man up and ask?

If you ask and they agree they will probably not be very relaxed and it will show in the pics.

Sneaky - some would call that candids. Use a telephoto and stand where you don't get noticed.

You're right; just do it. Forget whether it's posed or not, you can worry about that later after you've got used to approaching people. I've done this quite a lot and in almost every encounter the person has ended up happy with having been asked so you're doing them a favour (I'm not kidding). Just be yourself, don't treat it as a big deal, be a bit cheeky and funny. If they ask you why you want to photograph them just say shrug your shoulders and say you're a photographer. It's very empowering to be able to use people you meet to help you out whether it's as a model or just to hold a flash for you.

haha thanks. yeah im going to man up a bit then and get out there, because i dont really want to have to hide, and its hardly subtle with a big telephoto lens :p. i hope people are as willing as you say they are, on the other hand whats the worst that could happen. if people dont want it taking ill just walk away i suppose. good technique though a shrug of the shoulders im definitely going to use that.

A good way to start is to visit some sort of themed event where people dress up for the occasion. I have been to a couple of 1940s weekends and visitors are only too pleased to pose for the camera. That will give you more confidence to approach people in every day attire.

that's a cool idea. how did you get in with your camera? was it not private? ill keep an eye out in the paper for some local events. cheers jeff

I love doing candid stuff and i always tend to go with my long lens.
I like sitting on the seafront in the summer, telephoto attatched and live view on and people don't have a clue as the camera is in my lap so they carry on unaware.
