Just realised I've got this old Pentax lens lying in a drawer. Proper lens, heavy and smooth to operate, not like my toytown nifty fifty. It's fairly well regarded I believe.

Just for giggles would it be worth getting a K-mount -> Canon adapter and trying it out on my 500D, or is it unlikely to be worth the expense? If it's worth a shot, is there a particular type of adapter I should be looking for?

Thanks.

Its always worth a try, well regarded lens, you can get cheap 'K' mount adaptors off Evilbay, I would say go for the focus confirm one, as the Canon screen isnt the best for manual focus.

Dave.

Hmm, this seems to be a universal caveat which I don't like the sound of. b****r.

Notice: the aperture lever on the rear mount of PK lens may interfere with the reflecting mirror of EOS camera, so it is recommended to remove the lever before use.

What he said, I use a Pentax SMC 50mm f1.4 on my 20D and it great. the focus confirm adapters are not that pricey (it M42->EOS anyway) and worth a go just for that lovely smooth manual focusing feel.

Most of the interference issues are with full frame mirrors IIRC (I've had no problems with my M42 stuff or Olympus OM on my 20D).

I've just read one listing which states the models likely to be affected, as you say mine should be fine.

Will get an adapter and report back

You could get a 2nd-hand Pentax dSLR for less than £150 and sell it on at no or little loss at a later date.
