I'm looking for a DSLR and would like some opinions about the Pentax K100 vs the Canon 350 rebel XT.

I like the Canon as it has continuous shooting mode, but I have an old Pentax MV 35mm SLR with a 200mm zoom lens for it.

If I bought the pentax, could I use the old lens? I don't suppose the autofocus would work on it though....

The K100D surely does have a continuous shooting more, the buffer fills up rather quickly, though, so you won't get as many photos in one burst as with the Rebel XT (if I remember well).
I have no idea about the lens, but you haven't been very specific about the lens, so Pentax users could have a hard time telling you.

Have you thought about the Olympus E-410 (The cheaper brother of the E-510 - all it loses is the Image Stabilisation, and is a bit smaller)

Good deals can be had on the twin lens kit.

That is correct, you can still use manual focus lenses but autofocus will not work if the lens does not support it.

But, to make your decision more difficult, you could get an inexpensive adapter to be able to use the Pentax lens on a Canon body too.

I have a K100D, but no experience of the Canon. As long as your old zoom is a K mount without Ricoh auto contacts on it, it should work on the Pentax. You will have to multiply the focal lengths of your zoom by 1.5 to work out what its range will be in 35mm terms when used on the K100D. For example, the upper end will be 300mm for your lens. I think you multiply by 1.6 for the Canon.

If your lens has auto contacts for exposure setting on your existing Pentax, you will be able to use the auto on the K100D. Unless the lens is already a Pentax autofocus, you'll still be manually focusing. Having to do everything manually isn't much of a problem - I have several old K mount lenses with manual aperture and focus only - there's only an extra button to press to fix exposure. However, if you're wanting to photograph fast action subjects, you want everything to be as quick as possible, so you may end up buying a new lens.

I was lucky enough to buy the Samsung 50-200mm lens (their version of the Pentax 50-200mm and is perfect for the K100d) for £53 including delivery online from Jacobs recently. It is definitely easier to use than my old 70-210 manual only lens (as well as being smaller and lighter).

Hope this helps.
