Hi,

I don't normally shoot weddings but I've done a few in the past and doing a fairly low key one at a registry office and a couple of small venues for the receptions.

Previously I've chucked all my gear in a backpack style bag but just wondering what thoughts are to using a peli case (already own)?

I'm liking the thought of how quickly I can get what I want as already know how everything is laid out but is a peli case at a wedding the 'done thing'? Is anyone likely to care? I'd clean the mud off it first :)

Can't say I've ever seen a wedding tog carrying a case! Backpack leaves your hands free at all times to be shooting while your gear is close at hand. Personally I'd go for a messenger style bag though as it 's easy access and doesn't look so out of place at a wedding as a rucksack does.

That was my thought. Can't recall ever seeing one at a wedding but kind if makes sense due to having everything with me in a lay out I'm very familiar with.

Might just chuck the case in my boot so I've got everything I'm likely to need and more and go with normal bag for the actual venues.

Cheers

good idea, could also be secured down so that you are not walking about with it all day

That would probably be my choice were I to do weddings and the like - although after a few, I would hope to know what could safely be left at home. No point in taking all your kit if that includes a 500mm and a 2x extender! My backpack contains most of my SLR kit and everything has its place so I can grab what I want instantly. Sounds like your Peli is laid out so you can do the same so you just need to decide what you're likely to need and where in the smaller bag it's going to live!

I don't see why not, not like you'd be wheeling it around with you in the middle of the ceremony. (Just like I presume you wouldn't actually be wearing your backpack during the ceremony).

Previously I've always used a backpack or shoulder bag at events (including weddings) but it spends 99% of the time tucked in a corner or behind the DJ's desk. I just bought a ThinkTank roller bag and will be taking that in future. Take out what you need for the bit you're shooting, and leave everything else safe and tidy hidden out the way in the case.

I have a roller case I use for weddings, brought it when I was pregnant so I didn't have to lug my heavy backpack around.

I love it and won't be going back to the backpack. Like pervious post, it spends most of the time in a secure place or by my feet.

Slightly mixed thoughts then on the whole.

Obviously some stuff would get left behind regardless (don't fancy carrying the 300 2.8 around for the fun of it) and yes it would be out of the way same as my backpack one would be.

That said I guess I could just go with 2 bodies both with a lens and speedlight on, spare memory cards, batteries, lens cloth and maybe a prime in my pockets and if I need anything else run back to the car.

Thanks for your opinions everyone :)

Peli cases are designed for other people to carry. I can't imagine enjoying carrying a 10kilo case plus all the gear in it all day.

I've used them before at weddings where I needed to stash gear in advance. Locked peli case chained to immovable object at reception whilst I was at the church.

Also, never seen anybody look cool carrying a camera backpack. #justsayin

I've tried quite a few backpacks, the best I had was the Lowepro Vertex Aw300 which was a beast. Unfortunately it was also heavy to lug around.

In the end I swapped to a Calumet roller which I picked up from Focus and it's been a godsend. It's cheaper than a peli and slightly more discrete. You can roll it around so it's not weighing me down and easily parked in a corner of the room.

I know a few wedding togs who use Peli's and roller's. Frankly who cares how you look. You are there to do a job. I've seen togs turn up with a small messenger bag, three primes, no flash and rock a wedding. Others who turn up with a car full of gear. All depends on the sort of images you take.

With every bag I've owned, I've always outgrown it fairly quickly but with the Calumet I haven't. That says a lot in itself!

I wasn't being entirely serious. However, I've seen ad nauseam thread on how it's disrespectful to the B&G and the industry in general not to wear a suit and tie. It always baffles me when I see people with a suit and a Lowepro rucksack.

Jeez, you mean I can't do it in Tshirt, shorts and flip flops either???

Actually that's a good point, Would look odd with a suit. I think the last one I did a few years back I left the bag in the car and just had small things in pockets with bodies with lens on etc so may just go that route again.

Glad I don't do this more often... much easier sat on the peli case on a muddy field in the rain and cold :)
