Not sure if this should be in locations but will be seen by more people in here and it's nature based.

I will be travelling more and more this coming 12months with work to Sheffield from North Devon and thinking it might be worth me staying over an extra night or two to visit the Peak District but interested to hear what there and where to go regarding birds and other wildlife? Any pointers would be appreciated

I'm from Sheffield but no longer live there so I don't know as much as some do. My parents still live there and my dad being into wildlife photography has taken me to Padley Gorge (near Grindleford train station) which was pretty good. I've often seen quite a lot of birdlife in the woodland to the left of the footpath between The Norfolk Arms (off Ringinglow Road) and Fox House. I'm sure google would give you some good info too.

Hi Chris really appreciate you taking the time to reply, will take a look. I will be spending quite a bit of time up there over the next 12months first stop hopefully is Donna Nook next month for the Seal pups but then it will be trying to tag a day or two over a weekend around the peeks for a change of scenery and wildlife.

Usually a few curlews over-wintering (I think) on and around Stanage, plus lots of Grouse in the moorland. Various kestrels and things too. Also snapped a bird which I've so far failed to identify (but I'm not a birder).

I've never been to shoot wildlife, just rock climb, but pretty much always see lots of stuff on the walk in/out and think "Should've bought the long lens". Climbing involves enough clobber without extra weight too sadly.

Whilst out on my travels around the peaks looking for random landscapes i have come across deer, highland cows, various BOP's and some grouse. Foxes are also often seen milling around. Not sure about birds really. Seen a few jays and the usual finches etc on the various estates around the area too.

Thanks again, Grouse is something I don't think I get this way so that's grabbed my interest :)

Really? Parking at Burbage bridge and walking towards the back of Stanage I usually see quite a few and hear even more.

The Dark Peak area has it's fair share of Mountain Hares (still yet to go hunting for any myself), and there are a couple of good locations for Red Deer not too far from the outskirts of Sheffield (Big Moor and Chatsworth House), i spend most weekend mornings up on Big Moor stalking the stags at this time of year

There are a couple of decent reserves too, Old Moor (RSPB) to the North of Sheffield/Rotherham area, and Potteric Carr (Yorkshire Wildlfe Trust) just off the M18 near Doncaster

Thanks Den really appreciate your input, think it will be the new year before I can work a trek up that way into work, I managed to do donna nook last time so will try above as soon as I can tie it into a week up there, although looks like we maybe going on short time working if so it will give me an extra day in the week tie in with this :)

I will check my inbox as I am sure another member a couple of years ago gave me grid ref and some good info, also a couple of miles further on is a reserve of sorts forgot the name but its pretty big , it's signposted just near the main reservoir, they have a good set up with feeders it's a hot spot for siskin

Yeah it's near the cafe at ladybower if thats the one you're thinking of. Always lots of birds around the feeders and surrounding trees there. It's near the bottom of the dam where they practiced the bouncing bombs in the war.

Yep Dovestones can be excellent but it is a fair walk up and then a bit dodgy underfoot [rocks covered with long grass on decent slopes] if you venture off the paved road - I've just been photographing them in the Cairngorms though and that was a proper walk to get to em ;)

It is a superb place and I think the best time is late January - good for the Moray coast for sea ducks, Crested Tits easier to see and Ptarmigan and Mountain Hare in interesting winter states [plus a chance of Snow Buntings at Cairngorm ski car park! Also there are no midges then...:D
