Have a 6 y/o fujitsu siemens that switches on and will not boot, the screen has been flickering lately then turning white, i have tried using the reinstall cd to see if it would boot from that but no luck,
Has my HD failed any help appreciated

does anything appear on the screen at all when you turn it on?

do the lights on the base unit come on, does the hard drive light flicker?

Hi Neil, the hard drive light doesn't light as it's not clicking in just the green power light. the screen just goes into sleep mode as it's not recieveing anything from the pc.

Maybe Memory ? Could be a bad connection somewhere, you could try checking the connections (unplugging things and reseating)

POST beeps are supposed to be indicative of what the problem is, depends on your BIOS : http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml

Have you moved/banged the PC lately?

make sure the VGA card is seated properly, the VGA BIOS is first to load. The PC BIOS cannot complete POST untill the VGA has excecuted its BIOS.

Have you tried taking a run up and booting it?

6 years old is a pretty good life for a PC. It may be time to move it to that great recycling centre in the sky.

Take out the graphics card and see if it boots (or at least listen).
I've had a graphics card fail before and that stops it booting.

There is a battery on the m/board try replacing that and see if it boots then.

When computers run they get hot, when you turn them off they get cold. This hot/cold cycle can push things out. The monitor is separate from the computer so you need to start by trying the computer with a different monitor. Once that is ruled out then you are left with the base unit as faulty.

Right do any lights come on? If not I would suspect PSU although it could still be the PSU even it some lights come on.

The first step is take it apart and clean out the dust and debris. Once you have done that remove all the cards and memory. Blow the slots out and re-install them. Try again.

Clear the bios.

After that you need to try an alternate PSU or test that one.

Test the RAM by substitution although in most motherboards a faulty DIMM would result in the computer beeping at you.

If all the above has failed to help at all and the computer is silent then you are looking at a failed motherboard or CPU. The only way to check is by substitution.

Sad news I`m afraid. I had the same trouble with 2 F/S tv`s I just swapped over the processor and that was that. If you can get one now, they are expensive.
