Yes
I've jusr upgraded my PC from an Athlon system to an Intel system, new M/B, CPU, Ram, PSU & Case, however I'm using my old HDD with Windows 10 (free upgrade from Windows 7), connected everything else up, switched it on and evergthing appeared to be going well with Win.10 logo & startup running, then a message stating something along ghe lines of "configuring devices", the system is periodically accessing the HDD but I've been staring at a blank monitor screen for around 20 minutes now.

The installed drivers for your old AMD system will not be compatible with your new intel based computer which is why you are seeing the "configuring devices" message.
If Windows can't sort itself out you will have to do a clean install of Windows 10. When moving between different architectures it is best to do a clean install anyway.
Also Windows will need to be activated again, this will need a phone call to Microsoft. It is a automated phone system so not to time consuming.

Your first problem is that it is unlikely to be able to boot into Windows as the HD will be configured with all the drivers for your old PC. You could try booting into safe mode to start but it is a long shot. Your second problem is that your free upgrade to Windows 10 will be locked to your old PC, so even of you were able to get Windows to boot on your new PC it most likely will not be activated.

Redsnappa beat me to it. Has anyone tried phone activation with Win 10 yet? My understanding is that when you upgrade from Win 7 or 8 to Win 10, Microsoft check your eligibility for the free upgrade and then tie this to your particular PCs configuration ID forever. (With Win 10 there isn't a product key any more and no activation process as such). So reinstalling on the same machine again is no problem even with minor hardware changes, but installing on a different non-eligible PC will not be permitted.

Thanks guys, I thought it was simply a matter of onnecting my HDD and have Windows configure itself for the new hardware, then inserting my original Windows 7, zctivation key. Anyway I downloaded the Windows 10 disc image files onto my HDD, would it be possible to reinstall this into my old PC again and create a bookable usb.....or I could just buy an SSD and reinstall Windows 7.

Are you able to identify your PC motherboard manufacturer and model number? If so, you may be able to get the requisite drivers for Windows 10 from the motherboard manufacturer's support website. In earlier versions of Windows it has been possible to load the motherboard drivers after loading Windows - of course you need to reboot to get the drivers to load in the correct sequence, but you may find this solves your issue.

buy an ssd.

changing motherboard, even to a similer type as i had todo with my dads, trips the activation thing and i spent 40mins with windows tech support :x

but yeah, buy a ssd, and use hd for storing stuff, ssd for programs
