pc to hd tv

VGA to HDMI is an impossible connection using a straight cable.

DVI to HDMI or HDMI to HDMI is the best connection to go with, if this isnt possible, then VGA to VGA it is.

I connected my laptop to my HD ready Tv via a vga/vga cable, the images looked much better on TV than they did on the laptop (image wise, not content :) )

As mentioned above, you won't be able to go from VGA-HDMI without a rather expensive adaptor (not worth it), so go with VGA-VGA if that's the only output you've got. You can get quite cheap VGA-Scart adaptors if you don't have a VGA input to your TV. HDMI-HDMI or DVI-HDMI would be best though if you have the right input to the TV, and output from the PC.

That will be fine. Bear in mind that DVI (normally) does not carry audio, so you will need to run a seperate cable for audio, should you want audio from your TV speakers.

No, DVI-I just means that the DVI output can also output a VGA signal, if the appropriate adapter / cable is used.
