Advice needed,

Has anyone any tips for getting the PC correct on a film camera with a 35mm PC control lens.

IS it all just guess work and experience or is there a secret formula for getting things right?

I assume you're referring to the tilt adjustment, as shift is straightforward and easily observed in the viewfinder.

If you look up this

it should give you the basic idea. And the formula, probably. Tilt adjusts the angle of the plane that is in focus; the standard example being photographing a bookshelf from 45degrees, lens wide open and all the spines in focus, and photographing an acorn on the ground just a few inches away with front to back sharpness (in real life there are difficulties with this :) ).

You need to examine the image very carefully to check focus is correct, and you nearly always need less tilt than you think.
