Can't work out PayPal, I used it to buy something off here and specified a gift payment and got charged for sending the money

When I sold something and asked the buyer to do the same but when I got the funds I'd been charged?

So i get charged as a buyer and as a seller, WTF is that all about??

sounds like your buyer was naughty and didn't pay the fees - if the person making the gift payment doesn't pay the fee it will get deducted from the payment

Not correct. If your Paypal is linked to your bank account then the gift will be sent without any fees suffered by the sender or receiver. If it's not linked to your bank account i.e a credit card then then there will be fees involved.

yes but you've got to be certifiable to connect it to a bank account - that's just asking to get ripped off. There's also no fees involved if its from paypal balance.

However if you send money as a gift using a credit card as source there will be fees and if the person sending the money doesn't pay them the person receiving will find them deducted from the balance

And where do you get that idea from Pete? I have been with them since they started up, linked to my bank and not once had a problem.

if you're bank account is linked to your paypal , the identy fraudster only has to hack your paypal password and he has access to all the cash in your bank account.

If its unconnected only the paypal balance is at risk

Didn't you say in your post yours is linked to a credit card :shrug:

no , I said I use a credit card to fund it - I de link it when each transaction is done. However leaving it linked to a credit card would still be safer than linking to a bank account as card companies will notice and block iffy transactions - plus spurious transactions on a card are a lot easier to decline than missing money from a bank account

That's why I pay a bank to keep my money... Someone hacks,charges,withdraws.... whatever. I just call and get the transactions canceled and a refund then the bank deals with the fraud. I don't have time to go around linking and unlinking accounts that are within "secure systems" with fraud safeguards. If they can hack an account they can find your card history faster than you would think.

Can you prove that it wasn't you that transferred £500 by paypal gift , especially if you have a history of doing just that to pay for second hand gear

Hacking a bank account is reasonably hard - hacking a paypal account is a piece of **** especially as most peoples passwords aren't that strong. So why under mine all the bank security measures by linking your relatively secure account to something deeply insecure ?

I have never been asked to prove fraudulent activity on my bank account. I just start the process and the bank sorts it because it does happen and people would not keep money in banks if any glitch or fraud was up the the consumer to "prove" .... But yes paypal is mostly vulnerable because of weak user passwords thus not targeted by hackers but kids with simple macros.

In fact if you look carefully at the terms and conditions of bank fraud protection it says you have to take reasonable care ... and if they were feeling arsey they could easily say that leaving it linked to an insecure paypal account was not taking reasonable care.

Anyway we are well OT now... the answer to the OPs question is still as I originally said, the reason he's got hit for fees as seller is because the buyer didn't pay them

Just saying I haven't ever been asked to prove it. But yes... thats off topic and nether here nor there. I tend to think the OP was selected to pay fees by the buyer. Because if its a credit card fee I think that is charged to the buyers card and can't be passed on to the seller.

The fee is payable to paypal though not the card company - its been a while but I think when you make a paypal transaction that requires fees (usually because you are funding from a card although there are other reasons) it has a ticky box for who will pay fees

Usually when I use PPG on here the clear agreement is "buyer pays any fees" , hence my saying that the OPs buyer had been naughty - of course if that agreement wasn't made explicitly clear then either party could be to blame for the confusion.

If we are talking about ebay - its usually the seller that gets hit for fees , but you don't (or shouldn't) use the gift option to pay for anything on ebay anyway

no - I never get charged on selling either (except via ebay) because the buyer pays by agreement - as the seller its got nowt to do with what's linked

If you look at the classifieds on here nearly everyone specifies BT or PPG, straight paypal is not acceptable to the majority , because while it offers the buyer protection it offers the seller virtually none...PPG prevents a buyer from reclaiming the money from your account after you've despatched the goods. (although that said for high value items I prefer collection and cash)
