Hey folks,

As I don't use paypal a lot, or eBay for that matter, if like some advices please. Long story short, I returned an item as it wasn't as described. Seller says he processed the refund last Saturday and had another mail to say it left his account Monday. It's now Wednesday and nothing has happened in my account. Nothing pending, no activity at all. Is this normal?

Thanks I'm advance. :-)

Thanks, that's what I thought. He has emailed me today saying it says processing on his side. I think he withdrew the money and now has to find it from his bank account. He said he will ring paypal today to ask them. I'll give it a couple more days.

If you go into your Paypal account and look at the details of the transaction for your purchase, it may well give you some additional information that the refund is Processing / "Pending" - as if your Seller has withdrawn the funds from his Paypal account then the refund may be done by what is called an "Echeque" which will typically take 7-10 days to process..............

Echeque’s are where you have an insufficient balance within PayPal to pay for your goods outright and do not have a credit card on file with them. As PayPal will not allow your account to go into debt they take the necessary funds required to complete your transaction from your bank account. This request for funds from your bank account is where the delay stems from as it can take 10 to 14 days for PayPal to clear the funds from your bank and pass them on to the seller.

- and you will only get an email once the echeque has cleared, then the refund will be processed back to where you originally sourced your funds from! I had this happen once to me and it took about 3 weeks in total before the money went back onto my credit card.

No response to my last two emails and no payment showing today. I am a bit annoyed. I have emails from him confirming receipt of the goods back etc so unsure why the delay? Unless he is finding himself from his bank and waiting for that to clear in his account before he can send it to me?!

Can you open a paypal dispute and escalate it straight away?

If you can, I think Paypal claw the money straight back out of his account (even if that puts it in debit) while they decide the outcome.

Don't know if that would help, but if you have proof of his receipt of the item they should find in your favour quickly and refund you and then persue him for their money.

I didn't want to as I guess I'm too nice at times, so I've just sent him another message. He's had two since Wednesday and not replied so if I get nothing after this one, I'll start a dispute. I hope I can find the RM tracking number although I have his eBay emails saying that it has arrived back in the same condition, confirming it was scratched when he said it was mint and confirming he'd start a refund.

Did you check on your PayPal account? I know you say nothing pending, but I think you have to look at the original transaction details and it will say "Refunded" but still be processing.

Not too sure though can't really remember.

If nothing -> open up a case.

Hope it helps :).

I did check and nothing yet. :(

Don't know what's going on to be honest. I know there is 45 days to open a dispute. I will give him until tomorrow evening to respond to the last couple of emails.

Make sure it is a Paypal dispute not an ebay one as you can only have one or the other and Paypal is quicker at sorting out.

Will do. I've had an email back today. It sounds pike he's funded the refund from his bank account and its taking a whole to clear like an echeque. He does seen keen to sort it so we can cancel the eBay auction before he gets charged final selling fees for it. I'll give it the weekend I think.

If he's a seller with good long term feedback you will probably be fine, if not I'd raise the dispute anyway, you can always close it later and you don't owe him any favours.

Raise the dispute as there is a time scale that must be met to proceed...not sure of time frame but better to be safe than too late.

Steep, he has good feedback and has communicated well so will give him a few more days. Tugster, you have 45 days to open a dispute so plenty time should it go that far. Thanks for the advice though. :-)

Glad he has contacted you now, hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Still waiting. Have had a couple of further emails saying he is keen to get this sorted and sending me his phone number. I replied with my bank details to give him another option to transfer me the money directly. That was a few days ago now and nothing as happened. I have a feeling he has spent the money already and is possibly trying to raise it to pay me back?

I've sent yet another email asking where we are up to. Depending on the reply, I may have to start a Paypal dispute.

Open the dispute and if he pays up you can close it. Might spur him into action when Paypal take the money back from him (even if there is none in his Paypal account they will make it overdrawn)

Don't close it until the money is in your bank accout though!

Well,

I am now very concerned about this so would welcome any help i can get. I have sent three emails through eBay now and had no reply. The last message to me was on the 31st asking for my bank details, which I have provided twice. There has been eBay activity from the seller as he/she has bought several things since our transaction up until the 31st July. I just rang the mobile number I was provided with since this happened and the call was cancelled whilst it was ringing out. I have tried to raise a Paypal dispute tonight and it won't let me. It says because the payment is still 'in flight' despite it saying cleared on the Paypal transaction. I can't ring Paypal until tomorrow. So I am many £££'s out of pocket now and have nothing to show from it. NOT happy. :(

Are you now saying that if you look at the details for your original purchase in Paypal, the refund is showing as cleared?

If so, then the refund will now be sent back to where the original source of your payment was made from, whether that was your credit card or bank account.

No I am saying my original payment to the seller has cleared. A refund has never been initiated.

Based on your reply above "I have tried to raise a Paypal dispute tonight and it won't let me. It says because the payment is still 'in flight'"

-where in your Paypal account are you seeing this as this is a term I have not seen before?

Although if you waited a few more hours you could ring Paypal in the morning and get them to look at your account and explain the situation to you.

When I try to open a dispute and enter the case ID, that's the response that pops up. I will have to wait till tomorrow to ring I guess.
