Guys I have a PayPal account which is linked to my bank account. I sell stuff regularly without issue but tried to buy stuff via ebay last night and at checkout it said try another method.

Is this because there's no balance in my PayPal account? Probably a daft question but I thought it would just take the money from my bank account. If I simply transfer money into the PayPal account will that solve the problem?

It should take money from your account automatically.
Is the card that you’ve added to PayPal still valid (not expired). Is it verified?
 
That's probably why. I've had the account for 15 years or so so the card will be expired. Never thought of that. Cheers.

Just went into it and it says to pay at checkout using this account I need to complete a set up. I'll do this later. Thanks again.
