I see alot of transacations listed that state paypal no fees.
ive been an active member on another non photography related forum for several years where due to a few unscrupulous people they have now removed the sale of PP no fees. i find it very strange why anyone in there right mind would buy anything off the internet with the no fee option as by doing it that way you have zero protection if things go wrong.

surely its better to add the small surcharge to the end price and protect yourself as the buyer. i dont see any reason why sellers should have a problem with this if they are genuine.

i wont even consider purchasing without some kind of protection no matter how small and would rather off the seller the extra to cover it. ( 3.4% plus 20p ) so on a £300 sale about an extra tenner. surely worth it for security?

It depends, if I'm dealing with an established member with some feedback I think the risk is minimal so would use Paypal Gift.

If I was dealing with an unknown person with no history I would agree and probably add the 3.4% on top and send as normal PayPal.

so would you for instance buy from me under paypal gift ( dont worry im not trying ot sell ya anything lol ) .
its just that no matter how many posts someone has had or feedback from past they have had, doesnt mean they cant go "rogue". unless you know them in RL thenit can be very difficult to judge what someone is really like.
was chatting to someone the other day who had a member on a watches forum ( tag heuer, cartier, rolex etc. all very high end stuff ) who for past 2-3 years had made dozens of trades, purchases and sales and had over 5000 forum posts. but then out of the blue he went rogue on sale for a £7000 watch.. took the money and just vanished. it was done as pp gift because he had such a high reputation on there.. as yet still no explanation despite several people trying to contact him. seems hes cut all ties, blocked people on FB and various other locations and has on 3 occasions when been contacted by phone immediately hung as soon as been asked whats going on.
all very strange but it does happen, so i guess unless i actually knew the person in question and they were fairly local too then i will never purchase using pp gift.

On another forum I'm on we've had a recent problem with a guy scamming people using Paypal. You'd assume everyone wouldn't touch Paypal gift with a bargepole afterwards, but sellers are still asking buyers to make payment via PPG. I seriously don't get it, why would you risk it for the sake of a couple of quid in fees?

Possibly, I would still expect to get all your info (address, phone number, email address) before starting on our hypothetical sale ;) it would also depend on the value involved and the fact you've never sold anything here previously so it might make me think a little before deciding.

ah well actually i have sold on here.. twice in fact i think. but sadly feedback wasnt left which is a little frustrating

I've never had a problem with somebody adding additional funds to cover PayPal fees, but if you want the protection, they you're gonna pay for it. Not me.

You also have to remember that buyers can be scammers too, and PayPal are well known for siding with buyers, even though the seller is not a business, so most sellers are also trying to protect themselves.

Far to many buyers claiming not as described because an item arrives with dust on it.

Cash gives no buyer protection if you end up with a faulty product, and collecting in person can take time if you have to travel.

iv'e travelled from bolton to the south coast on more than one occasion to buy camera gear amongst other items before now the travel doesn't bother me if it's closer all the better for me but the logistics of travelling hundreds of miles to buy something will definitely not suite everyone
i like to do this because i can see who i'm dealing with and inspect the item before i hand over the money they can do the same, it's a two way street
maybe iv'e been lucky with camera gear everyone i have met and done dealings with including people other than forum members have been genuine
if it does indeed turn out to be faulty i like to believe i will be able to sort things out having met and spoke to the person i bought it off
if it means travelling back to the sellers address to do this so be it

as with anything i send. i take shots of the product obviously before the sale , then at stages of the packing ( unwrapped item, then the wrapping, wrapped item internals of the box etc, then the finished box.all labeled and dated. and always send it insured delivery. that way if there is any issue or dispute ( arrives damaged or buyer states it doesnt work or something broken ) then im pretty much covered.
in fact i think i sold a nifty fifty to a member on here.. it arrived broken, so they returned it and i refunded the cost of lens and return shipping, was well packaged but clearly the damage happened in transit and put in claim with royal mail including all the pics of the packing process.. no dispute from RM at all and got a cheque a few weeks later . all a i little inconvenient but sometimes these things happen.

ahhh just found it. the sale was to @Hugh Jarse with the nifty fifty that turned up to Steves Broken.. returned refunded and all sorted ...
Hi steve btw hope your doing good.

So do Paypal underwrite any loss if the 3.4% is paid? even to a private seller!

A quick look on Paypal shows the following:

PayPal Buyer Protection is available for purchases you make both on eBay and off eBay:
  • Purchases made on eBay
  • For eligible items, protection is available for both items not received (INR) and significantly not as described (SNAD); and
  • Purchases made off eBay
  • For eligible items protection is available for INR only

In addition, for items purchased off eBay, you must meet all of these requirements:
Send the payment to the seller through:
  • The Send Money tab on the PayPal website by clicking the Purchase tab and selecting Goods
  • The seller's PayPal checkout flow
The item you purchase must be a physical, tangible good that can be shipped

And

Items purchased off eBay:

If PayPal finds in your favor on your claim, PayPal will reimburse you for the full purchase price of the item and original shipping costs – with no cap on coverage

yes full refund including the 3.4% ( not sure about the flat rate 20 pence admin fee but think i can cope with that loss !)

I've had no problems trading here with Paypal gift or bank transfer. But I check someone's trading Feedback and posting history first - I'd be wary of sending cash to someone with no feedback and only the minimum number of posts. It's less of an issue as a seller - I don't post anything until payment has cleared.

I only use Ebay to buy from professional traders. Too many time wasters to bother trying to sell anything there anymore.
