Paypal blocked a payment

Just tried to pay for something using paypal, my normal method of payment on E-bay, it blocked the payment saying there was an 'unacceptable level of risk' And suggested another method of payment either E-cheque or credit card, which I won't be doing as I'm obviously wary of continuing the transaction.

Not sure what it's all about as I've never had any problems with paypal in all the years I've been using them, and the seller of the item appears genuine with 98% positive feedback (5000+ transactions)

Just curious to know if anyone else had this, and any reasons behind it?

Here is an explanatory message from pay pal

Pay Pal is constantly working to protect our members against fraud. We review every transaction before it is approved, and we may block a payment when we detect a potential risk.

Our reviews take into account every aspect of a transaction, including looking at both parties. These decisions help us maintain the integrity of our payments network in the same way as other payment processors: by declining transactions with an unacceptable level of risk.

While our fraud measures occasionally block a legitimate payment, to maintain overall security, we cannot overturn any decisions about an individual transaction.

If you decide to continue this transaction using a different funding source, please note that the associated risk levels have not been decreased.

Also Les if you have had an unusual level of activity on your account that may also be a trigger ( Yorkshire Weekend ? )

Could be, but I made another payment (to a different seller) not long after the blocked one, and that went through without a problem :thinking:

Sorted, it wasn't paypal that blocked the payment, it was my bank, I got a call from their fraud department this morning, they blocked the payment as it was for a largish amount, and suspected it was fraudulent (not on my part I hasten to add)

After I reassured them it was OK they unblocked the payment, and I went ahead with the paypal payment.

It's nice to know that sometimes our banks do try and look after us :)

I had the same thing happen. It was with a website that took paypal/visa etc but I opted to use paypal to save typing in my info :D, after paypal was refused I tried with my Visa card & it was refused as well

One call to the Bank & all was sorted

nice to know the cc companies look for unusual activity via paypal as well as normal purchases. Had my cc stopped recently so they could check I really was spending that much on a camera :)

I've had the same thing when I was trying to buy my Carl Zeiss 16-35 on Ebay. It was one of those "Immediate Payment Required" things so I had to phone Egg at 10pm to get them to unblock it pronto!

You may think it's nice now, but just wait a bit...
Happens to me almost weekly and it gets pretty bloody annoying.

I also had a payment blocked for a bargain deal on a large HD TV screen and by the time it was cleared up & tried to re-order it was out of stock and I missed out

I'm pleased it not just me ;)

Although I sympathise with Delk, it must be horrendous to happen so frequently.

What worried me, I thought it was paypal that blocked the payment , not realising that the block was my bank, that didn't become clear until my bank rang me.

I'd assumed (wrongly) that there was something fishy about the E-bay seller.

Me too, had two payments blocked in the space of a week, I buy tons of latex stuff off ebay and never had a problem but bought a 1k lens and some Bowens kit this weekend and got blocked they wanted me to pay by echeque, safety I guess.

Paypal is the worst company I have ever had dealings with. Two weeks ago I tried to set up a paypal account for the purpose of ordering through Kerso. Despite numerous e-mails and assurances by paypal, I am still unable to send payment (blocked). Their customer service stinks. The knowledge amongst their staff and supervisors varies form day to day. Still waiting on a manager to get back to me. On my first experience with paypal, my advice is avoid at all costs, as they don't have a clue :thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

just pay via bank transfer its cheaper and paypal offers no protection outside of ebay anyway
