Is there any way of password protecting folders in Windows explorer? I've got a USB stick and one of the folders is for my electronic payslips which I'd prefer other people to not be able to access if I need to lend them the drive.
I'm using Windows XP at work and Vista and 7 at home, if that's makes any difference.

Thanks

There are plenty of ways of doing it but surely the simplest is to buy another USB stick just for your private stuff, given how cheap they are now....

I've been using FileWaster for about 2 years now, and it's still Free :)

It allows you to encrypt folders or files and also to securely delete (wipe) what you no longer want. You simply drag the folder to the FileWaster screen, type in your Key (password you make up) and click on encrypt. When you want to read the file or folder you drag the folder to the FileWaster screen, enter your Key and click on decrypt instead.

I appreciate that keeping things separate is always the best way, the above was just a current example situation.

Thanks for the link. So you would need the program installed on any PC you wanted to access the encrypted data with then?

I'm surprised that there's not even some basic protection provided within Windows (unless I'm missing it somewhere?)

The program can be downloaded to the USB stick and run from there (Filewaster.exe). No need to have it on any PC if you don't want to :)
