Passport renewal after expiry

Seems like something that Google would know but I can't find it, is there a time limit after a passport has expired that it needs to be renewed without going through the full process? My passport expires in a month and I'm not likely to need it any time soon, can I just wait until next year?

An expired passport is still a passport and, as long as expired fairly recently, can be used for identification purposes (but not travel obvs) and a fresh picture should suffice for the renewal process. I recently renewed mine online and (having just checked the gov website) the question about when did your passport expire had a suggested date of May 2007.

One thing to bear in mind: I use my passport as evidence of identify for work and volunteering, some of which require a current passport. Your non-travel personal circumstances might be the clincher for whether you renew now or later.

My passport hadn't been renewed for about 10yrs and mislaid it at home somewhere. I applied for a new one and they renewed the old one instead. It's probably around 10yrs out of date again by now.

If there’s a time limit it must be a fairly long one, I renewed my passport in January and my previous one had expired in 2013.

Did the wife’s in January ,took her photo following the guidelines , then applied online where it tells you if you have filled it in correctly . And the picture is o.k .. got it back within a week easy peasy

As long as it's not a hand-written passport (i.e. it is a digital one produced by a computer) you should be good to renew whenever you want. My last hand-written passport expired in June 2000.

Yes I'd seen that but unless I am missing something the Renewal section doesn't give a period of time after expiry, I suppose that could mean that there is no time limit.

Months should be OK; years might be; decades could be a problem. If there's a help line/customer service e-mail addy, I'd drop them a line.

Years is definitely ok, as I said, I renewed with my old passport seven eight years after expiry.

That's good to hear, my passport expired in 2018 and I'll need to renew before next year

It went extremely smoothly, took the photo myself (using my iPhone) and applied online, from sending the old passport off to the Passport Office to having the new (black) passport drop through the door was ten days.
