I'm thinking of buying a Canon Selphy CP800 to use as a portable passport/ID printer, could anyone using this printer advise whether the print quality is suitable, or are there other similarly sized & priced printers which would be better suited.

Hi I used it recently to print out photos of guests taken at a party in front of a red curtain as a give away gift. Though it was at night n lighting wasn't at its best the outcome was good. I haven't used it to print passport photos so can't say.. Its a bit slow specialy when reading large images of an SD card

Thanks Sara, I'm not too concerned about print speed as I'll only be printing a few small optimised files at a time from a laptop, I'm more concerned about print quality as the selphy CP800 can be purchased for around £60.00 while certain retailers are selling dedicated Passport/ID printers for £200 - £800.

To be honest I'm currently using a HiTi-730PS (the print quality is excellent) but it's a bit bulky and heavy to carry around for the odd passport job, although I would consider sticking with the HiTi for larger ID jobs if the Selphy was too slow.

Yeah it is. If that's what you need then it will be fine. Just if you were after luster paper, or the pre-punched stuff that some use then you might come stuck.

Ah I see, Thanks Dave,

I'm not sure about pre-punched paper but it might be handy to have the lustre option.

If the print quality is good enough and the branding (back printed logo) isn't too heavy I think I'll give it a try, as at £60.00 plus £27.00 for 108 prints I'm shure it will pay for itself very quickly.

I used it for printing keyrings, which just happened to be passport size. Perfectly clear prints even with small groups, so with a head shot it will be more than good enough.

We use a Mitsubishi DW9550DW DyeSub printer for passport/visa/driving licence/id photos.

The quality is excellent, the speed is fine and the profit margin attainable is...........awsome.

Media is less than £100 for 600 6x4 prints, potential turnover is £3500+

These printers are discontinued but loads available all over the place at reasonable prices.

Did some earlier today using Passport Studio software and a Selphy CP810. The program produces 2 photos on a 4x6 sheet. Good quality and reasonably fast for that job.

I recorded an action in photoshop and use it all the time for passports. 2 seconds I have six 35x45 images on a 6x4 , press print and the jobs done.

Ok I bought the Selphy CP800 and reprinted some old passport images.

While the print quality is adequate it's not quite up to the quality from my HiTi 730PS. it's a small price to pay for the increased portability of the Selphy.

I have also discovered that the Selphy paper is slightly smaller than 6"x 4" inches, therefore it only prints 6 UK passport sized images on a sheet instead of 8 as printed on the Hi-Ti.
