Party and portrait lens

I guys I'm looking for a good party/portrait lens was thinking sigma 24/70mm 2.8 is this ok or any other suggestions ?
 
Is this on a crop or full frame sensor?


24-70 is fine on FF but perhaps not wide enough for groups at parties if a place is packed!
 
Yeah, a focal length designed for a crop body would be more useful, such as the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
 
As an alternative, it might be worth thinking about a faster lens, like a 35mm f1.8 on a crop, or even a 35mm f1.4 which might help take shots using available light, rather than using flash.
Obviously depends on the venue, and how much light there is.
 
My favourite party pics have always been taken without flash on my 85mm f1.8 and my 50mm f1.4 using my D700. Not using a flash is a big plus in my opinion.

I love my 85mm, easily my favourite lens.
 
The last (decent sized) party I shot at, I found the 85mm f/1.8 did the job nicely (mounted on a 1D3).
