I have been studying and studying the forums, magazines, taking advice from the educated and decided that rather than spending a set amount of money on a dedicated portable studio think my 'style' would lend itself to a more portable setup using speedlight type flash units.

As you hopefully can see from my sig I've got a Canon setup which includes a Canon 580EXII but have decided that despite the ability to use E-TTL on multiple flash units I want to go the manual route in order to have more control over the final image.

Rather than immediately buying an extra 2-3 flash units with brollies/ softboxes, stands, sundries. etc, want to expand at a gradual rate, which hopefully will match my learning curve.

So for starters I would happily start with my 580EXII mounted on a stand with a softbox being controlled by say, a remote trigger, then when I got the hang of that, then move on to a second unit, which doesnt necessarily have to be an E-TTL or even a Canon in order to keep costs down, and then on to a third and so on if I feel it is required.

With regards to the type of pics I want to take, I seem to be biased more towards 'on location' type shots, where the location itself will be the background.

So.. the questions is, exactly what kit would I need to mount my first flash on a stand and then what would anyone recomend regarding a 2nd unit and can people give examples where quality isnt compromised too much by budget.

My basic setup from the floor is...

Stand, 360deg ballhead adaptor, Radio trigger, 430mk11 flash and 24in softbox.

Most of this is available from FITP in forum advertisers section.
Most people get their stands from 7dayshop.com for about £12...

:)

i have a very simliar setup to mark, except i have an old sb-26 flash gun. its a good way to learn, and all the kit is available cheap from flash in the pan in the classifieds, except the stand. its really easy to get setup, and gives good results. i here the flashguns he sells too are pretty good aswell for a second unit, and cost 35quid or so!

So on a basic level you need the following to mount a flash as a light source.

Stand.
Flash.
Softbox/brolly.
Trigger.
360 Ballhead.

The bit I'm a touch confused over is the ballhead apaptor and how it works. From what I've seen it pops on to the top of the stand and then allows the flash to be connected and the softbox also?

I'd assumed that the flash stands have a tripod type screw but they dont seem to?

Sorry if this is basic stuff but just want to get a feel as to how it all is assembled.

If you go softbox, you won't need the ball-head adapter as the SB has all the fittings. With a brolly, you will.

So...

Use your 580EXII, stand (Konig, from 7dayshop), softbox (recommended), RF-602 transmitter and receiver units, job done. The softbox fits directly on to the stand's spigot and the bracket on the softbox takes the receiver with the 580 on top of it.

If you go the brolly route, you will also need a ball-head adapter which fits to the stand as above, and has a hole for the brolly shaft, plus a shoe for the receiver and flash on top.

For additional units you will need the same again. If you go for a cheap Yongnuo unit it has a built in optical slave that should fire off the 580's flash but I think it needs direct line of sight which might be difficult. Best to add another RF-602 receiver for reliability.

Thanks Hoppy. This is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for. I'm deffo gonna go the RF-602 route as I feel this is the best control and I wont have to worry about line of sight or pre-flash causing confusion, and have already ordered the basic transmitter/receiver from flash in the pan.

I'll look at the stand and a softbox as you recomend to start with. Then prob move onto a brolly as a second light and so on. One step at a time though.

Using flash in the pans / 7 day shop prices as an example it looks like I can build a basic portable studio one light source at a time for about £110 per light source (Flash £35 Softbox £38 Stand £15 RF602 Receiver £12 plus various P&P).

Thanks for everyones help. This is great.

a ball head and dual duty brolly add flexibility as do homemade grids and snoots.
this could be added with second flash though

also you might find a canon flashgun more powerful and faster to recycle
