Hi
I recently started printing (in a lab) some of my images and I think I got addicted :) However, I am struggling with the paper selection. I printed one on Kodak silk and it is a strange textured paper but I liked the result. The other two I printed on a Fuji velvet, and the contrast and colour saturation were pretty poor. Obviously well suited for other type of photography. What I am trying to achieve, is a good representation of colours and high contrast, on high quality paper with this "professional" look to it. You know you get a print from Colin Prior, it is not gloss, but colours are still vibrant and representative of the true conditions.

A side note, I am not a fan of true gloss.

What are your recommendations?

I would see if the lab you use does a similar sample pack to the one Simon's linked to. Ideally with the same image rather than a selection of different ones. Even a few 6x4s will show you which paper you prefer. If necessary, send them a file and get some prints on different papers.

Get yourself a sample pack from The Print Space - loads of different papers, though with different images on each - for £6.

I like the C-Type Fuji Matt for most colour stuff but I don't print landscapes.

I think you may have pointed me in the right direction there Simon. I want to do some painterly prints and the Hahnemuhle german etching is what I have seen elsewhere and is the look I'm after.

There's no substitute for doing test prints, though. I thought I was going to prefer German etching but the C-Types beat inkjet for me nearly every time.
