Panasonic GX1+14-42 £299+£50 cash back

That's a great deal. I've been set on getting the G3. £300 inc kit lens with the cash back offer on Amazon. More bang for the buck than the GX1 and you get the articulated screen and EVF. If only the GX1 had that screen. Great deal though! I'm very tempted. Too much choice. Argh....

Can anyone convince me why I should get the GX1 insted of the G3?

That deal must have proved popular as they've put the price up already! Now £289 after cash back instead of £250.

Actually it looks like they've sold out of the GX1 plus lens deal the OP linked to. Just the body left I think.

Yes I saw that one earlier. A good deal if you're just after a body. Looks like I'll go for the G3 with kit lens plus cash back. Before the offer on the body how can Amazon price the G3 body and G3 body +lens for the same price, £350?

I very nearly went for the GX1 deal. My heart said GX1, my head said G3. If only Amazon or someone else would have the G3 + kit lens on special offer.

Amazon have g3 on deal of the day. 249 before cash b ack !

GX1 looks great but I like using a viewfinder and a swivel screen can be very handy sometimes, so I would lean towards the G3 for those reasons. It (G3) was £230 body only (£200 after cashback) at Wilkinson cameras last week but price has gone back up and they are sold out anyway.

I have seen body + kit lens sell for less than body only sometimes - not on these particular cameras though but on others. There is probably still a fair bit of G3 stock to shift so there will hopefully be more deals over the next few weeks - will post here if I spot one.

Yes I found it hard to justify buying the GX1 over the G3 even with the great deal at WEX. I guess it's credit to Panny that they offer two more or less identical cameras, in terms of performance, but in different forms to suit individual taste.

Yes, in some ways I prefer the rangefinder format and smaller body of the GX1 as long as it has a decent grip - but the grip on the G3 and GX1 could both be improved (compared to say the Nex grip which is better, or the G5 grip which is also an improvement on the G3). But I also prefer an evf and the add on one is a) too expensive and b) bulky/awkward (taking the camera in and out of a bag etc) and I would be worried about damaging it.

This side by sidecomparison is quite useful:

As you say -it's good that Panasonic offer both options unlike Olympus who so far only offer a built in evf in one camera (OMD) and that's a lot more expensive than the G3! There are rumours of a GX2 with a built in evf and of an Olympus Pen with a built in evf too - to compete with the Nex 6 I guess, but no idea how much truth (if any) there is in the rumours.

The EVF add on for the GX1 looks like an accident waiting to happen. An improved GX2 with EVF would be great. But when it's released I'll probably be seduced by cheap deals on the old GX1

For me it was pretty easy, I have a main camera and wanted something compact (coat pocketable) so went for the GX1 instead. Build is very nice (not plasticky).

I got a GX1 as a second camera about a month ago (a fantastic deal on a mint- body and PZ lens kit from Ffordes ). My main camera is a 5D2, and I was concerned about the lack of VF on the GX1, and whether I'd get along with just using the rear screen (I too think the mounted LVF2 looks like an accident waiting to happen, not to mention ruins the rather lovely pocketable form factor of the camera).

In practice I'm very happy indeed; I find in most lighting conditions the rear screen is more than adequate, and allows for angles of view that are good enough for composition purposes when taking shots in awkard postions, even though it's not articulated. Also I find that not having the camera right in front of my face makes for more discrete people photography, which the GX1 excels at.

Anyway, always good to get to grips with another system; that's why I wasn't really tempted by the Eos M (well, that and the ridiculous price Canon are charging for those at the moment was another factor...)

Perhaps if I only had one camera an EVF would be an essential accessory, but as a second system to back up an SLR, I don't really miss it.

Wilkinson have the G3 body back in stock at £229 (£238 delivered/ £208 after cashback).

http://www.wilkinson.co.uk/cameras/...anasonic/panasonic-lumix-g3-black-body-2.html

The info on the above page is wrong though - cashback is £30 on body only not £50 and the cameras are open box (split from G3 + X lens kits) - it doesn't mention this - not that that really matters, but usually sites do mention when an item is open box and split from kit, otherwise people might wonder why they get a non sealed box with a different description to what they ordered. :)
