those that know me will know that I love to tinker to get things working my way ,so after 3 weeks with this rig and playing daily to try and get it set up right for b.i.f heres my thoughts so far .and if it can get shots like this I,m happy enough
are you ready by jeff and jan cohen, on Flickr

so heres what I have done so far to get there ,obviously only of interest to G80 owners but there are people on the sidelines of getting one of these so it might help .

first off I wasn't happy with not being able to move the single point focus button without using the screen (not good in my case as I have greasy skin) so by going to spanner c set up page 3/9 turn the direct focus area to on .
this now enables your focus point to move around the screen by touching one of the four tabs ,but it also disables the other functions they do .

so go to your assign function buttons set up
I have left button fn1 to exp compensation
button fn4 to focus area i.e single or multi point
button fn5 to i.s.o
thus replacing all the keypad functions ,
I think you need a high shutter speed with that long lens so have changed to shutter priority and try to achieve (light dependant ) a speed exceeding 1/1250th sec with i.s.o set to auto .

for now (under review) a/f lens is set to plus 2
and I am trying out (just found this one) monitor luminance set to 1* to brighten up the image you see as your looking through the viewfinder .subject to trial and error

I might well be spouting a load of cobblers ,but it might help others struggling ,any input on this and /or fresh workable ideas gratefully appreciated

I'm actually loving the touch screen on my G80, and use it to select focus point. It's the first camera I've owned that has touch screen.

I don't own the 100-400, but some other info on the camera that might be useful to new owners:

I mostly use 1-Area, using the rear thumb wheel to re-size the focus area, and 'Disp' button to bring it back home. This was something that caught me out when i first got the camera, I did a [paid] family portrait session just after I'd got the camera and thankfully noticed after a few shots [as I do tend to chimp] that I was missing focus on the faces a lot. Without panicking [I was still using my Fuji cameras at the time, so had back up either way], I took a time out [one of the kids was acting up so I used that as an excuse] and sat down to figure it out. I had been knocking the focus box way off with my thumb between shots, this is when I discovered that a simple click of that 'Disp' button returned it back to centre. And I double check before shooting now that it's where I need it.

Does this have an adverse effect on watching exposure compensation results.

As stated mike I have just put this in ,it’s yet to be field tested ,by writing it up as well this serves as a memory check to what I have actually altered .there are so many sub sub menus on this beast that it’s easy to forget what you have done . I’m also finding exp comp to be a double edged sword on this camera and definitely not needed as heavily as on canons for instance

Surely you'd use the highlight warning / zebras and / or live histogram to judge exposure, not what it looks like on the screen or EVF?

not found a problem so far with getting exposure right Simon ,I'll cross that bridge when I come to it .and as I said I only found this monitor luminance setting last night so it might or might not work ,as a glasses wearer sometimes extraneous light makes looking through the viewfinder of ANY camera or scope for that matter a problem at times .trial and error

As a fellow glasses wearer Jeff, I feel your pain!

Not when ime chasing birds in flight ;)

I wasn’t that happy with today’s results as I used shutter priority as opposed to a/v or manual mode ,this I believe has led to higher iso values which equates to more noise ,the keeper rate though slightly better is not as visually good as the other nights ,I will gather my thoughts and try again tommorow

just been doing some late night editing ,and I think ? I'm right in stating this ,I have been using Lightroom CC for my editing followed by finishing in p/s .and as I was doing with the canons using the latest presets in L/R just done a couple more where I have reverted to doing it the old manual way and the results are far better ,I have a gut feeling that L/R doesn't have the correct profiles for this camera /lens combo to work in auto mode .time will tell but a little nudge each day helps it move along
