A little background first.
After using the Pana G80 and 100-300mm Mega OIS, I recently bought the Leica 100-400mm Power OIS, and saw an improvement. So last week I went the whole hog and bought the G9. The last three days has been with the Leica 100-400mm on the G9, the combo I want for wildlife.
Ergonomics/Features
No complaints at all. Obviously it felt chunky coming from the G80, but this is better with the 100-400mm lens because the chunkier and slightly weightier camera seems to fit with the bigger heavier lens in my opinion. The go together well.
I feels good in the hands (I'm about medium size hands) The button and dial layout is very good and I find it easy to use, a tad more than the G80 but not much in it.
The Joystick is nice, a quick touch, and there's the focus box highlighted on the screen, shift it or change the size in an instant.
I love the top LCD panel and I switch off the back screen most of the time, menu work is done at the start and then the top screen usually suffices.
2 Burst mode settings on the manual dial is nice, I have high burst mode set on 1 and Pre-Burst on 2
Pre-burst shows potential but no keepers yet. Lock focus and hold it on the bird, birds take off, press the shutter, you have 0.4 sec of burst shots before you pressed the shutter, to catch the take off you missed. It does use up the battery though, I'll be buying a second one.
The shutter button is very light compared to the G80, on a few occasions I have taken shots before I wanted to, very sensitive, but I am getting better with it and I think that overall I prefer it to the G80.
Results so far
The weekend has been cloudy and dull, lousy for photography, so hardly a good chance to really see what it can do. As with the G80, when it's dull it does like to jump to ISO 3200 but I do think the quality is a tad better with this sensor, not massive, but a wee bit better.
The biggest benefit I have seen in this limited time is the faster FPS with RAW files in the burst mode. Due to the cloudy weather I took my chances where I could and shot some local football, and having more FPS does help catch the right moment. I can also see an improvement in hit rate on BIF, although it can still hunt a bit sometimes at first.
Overall it's been a pleasing 3 days, not a lot of opportunities for good images but I can see the potential and it just feels a better camera in use, with a bit more "oomph" where I need it and a few new features to help catch the wildlife. I'll wrap up with a footy shot, I had those few extra shots to help catch the right moment and really liked the way this one came out.
High burst mode, 1/1000FPS, ISO 3200
