painting on MDF...

making some doors for cupboards, out of MDF..thinking of using acrylic eggshell
paint, I'v got a spray-gun , but don't fancy using gloss paint, because of fumes..any idea which is the best way to seal the MDF, before i spray the eggshell on...thanks.

It's a ******* to paint, seal it with PVA mixed with water first, then prime it with spray primer, then top coat it with spray paint for MDF

thats what i would normally use...some say don't use this, use only spirit based
products to seal first.. :thinking:

then apply the eggshell,...
it needs to withstand everyday knocks...so must be hard on edges...

You can buy a specific MDF primer that seals the fibres and prevents them from expanding.

Acrylic primer.....dries quick, quick rub down between coats with fine grade sandpaper, then use acrylic undercoat which dries quick, remembering to rub down between coats then couple of coats of your finish. Bit time consuming but if you want a nice finish, which I presume you do for doors, then there isn't a 'quick' way of doing it. Remember after you have rubbed down to wipe off the dust otherwise you will get a c**p finish.

Instead of spraying use a 'gloss foam roller' which is about 4" and will speed the job up and give you a nice finish.
