Painting and Drawing

Wow, that is amazing.

I tried to draw a cat for someone recently, from a photo. My cat, not theirs, just to illustrate an idea I had. It did bear a vague resemblance to something feline if you half closed your eyes and used a lot of imagination.............
Something a bit different - a digital copy of a sketch I did at the telescope eyepiece. I use a very old version of what is now Corel Painter and I have well over 100 of these sketches that I'm slowly digitising.

Come on folks - there must be more or us who do this. Don't be shy.

Forgive the rubbish mobile phone pic, but this was my old girl, Chloe. GSD and the best dog I ever had. Still miss her.
done on a piece of A4 with a standard HB pencil.

I was wondering if anyone else here does any painting and / or drawing.

If so, might it be a nice idea to have a thread to show off your masterpieces?

Here's a recent one from me. Drawn with a fountain pen.

Cat looks very much like Louis Wain cats - I really like his work and that reminded me of his work. Thanks for sharing.

I had to google him but recognised the pictures as soon as I saw them.

Cheers

In January I picked up the pencils for the first time since leaving school (a good while ago!) and recently set up a little, non commercial, website for sharing my efforts. www.andrewsart.uk/gallery (hope this isn't against the rules!)
Currently they all revolve around my interest in motorsports, and in particular motorcycle racing, but I hope to branch out into other interests as time permits. I'm just enjoying drawing again, I find it extremely relaxing after a long day in the office.

This was my first effort after returning to the hobby!

Thanks Simon.
Took a long time, something like 40 hours, but was pleased with the outcome, hence the seemingly continual process of either having something on the go or planning the next effort.

Pleased I took the plunge off the deep end and got back into it!

Wow Andrew, that is GOOD :)
I know someone who can do the same sort of highly detailed drawings as yours but he does aircraft. I'm not jealous - I just recognise that some people have real talent and some ................ don't

Thanks Jan,
I buy a lot of drawings off an artist who does both pencil drawings and oil paintings of motorcyclists, and that is why I decided to get back into it (no shortage of inspiration on the walls) and I can assure you his drawings are absolutely incredible. Almost photo like in realism.

We all do what we can, we all have talents hidden somewhere, sometimes we just need to find it ;)

Andrew, that's pretty amazing....you have a talent!

Thank you Ruth.

More than welcome.

looks Great Simon (y)
The rocks in particular are superb

Rocks are lovely to work with - lots of texture and shapes and shadows. I take my sketchbook and pencils when I go walking and there's lots of rock on Dartmoor. I'm not so good on trees as there aren't many on the moors, but I know a few nice ones and you're giving me the urge to practice now.

Up on the Moors

A Moorland Tree by Simon, on Flickr
Good example of some "rules" of composition in there as well. The tree is a on line of thirds on the right, the horizon is on a line of third towards the bottom. The entirety of the tree, branches and all, are all inside the frame, not clipped off and all the rocks again are within the frame and not clipped. How many landscape shots have people seen where bits are clipped off at the edge and where a bit of manoevring your position or zoom in/out would resolve this? Anyway I digress, great sketch!

Not saying that Simon did any of this (he probably didn't need to) but one advantage of sketching or painting is that you can move things that aren't quite in the right place, leave out things you don't want there, etc............ Once many years ago I was having a moan to a guy who painted about one of my best photos that could have been improved by a better sky and he said 'in a painting you can do anything'. He also told me that anyone can paint. Hmmmmm..................... I've tried, with a tutor standing over my shoulder, and he's wrong........

Thanks everyone. Some interesting points made.

Yes, you can, and often should, do anything you want. Last night I was watching Landscape Artist of the Year. All the paintings were entirely different and none were "copies" of the landscape.

In the above sketch the tree is from a photo, everything else is entirely made up.

I was criticised on an art forum for having the tree entirely in view. Interesting how views differ.

Everyone CAN paint. End of.

The issue is deciding what you think is meant by painting and what your expectations are.

I'm a dab hand with a roller and am pretty good with a 1 1/2" brush. Can just about draw the curtains or a bath. Making pictures is beyond me unless I'm allowed to use a camera!

I can paint as in I can emulsion a wall...................;)
I tried a bit of watercolour but it was the mixing that got me. Just how do you know or remember that combining two or more completely unrelated colours makes the one you want? My brain just doesn't work that way.

The same way that you know anything else - study and practice.

As an example, I have sheets and sheets of paper on which I have made every combination of 2 coloured pencils.

You soon start to get the hang of it, plus you then always have your reference sheets.

Learn some colour theory too.

It's not hard.

But this is my usual thing...........
Someone whose name I shall never know has good reason to be thankful I sketch as I was here to find him and set him on his way home after he'd become hopelessly lost. This was mid afternoon and I hadn't seen anyone else for most of the day. Sketching from life gives you all those little stories to remember - like the cloud coming down and having to finish off from memory, and getting finished 2 seconds before a downpour. And the mid sketch fly by from a golden eagle in Scotland.

I recently took up digital art, iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, I really enjoy putting a record on and sketching.

My Dad is my inspiration, elderly dementia chap took up painting/drawing 6 odd years ago shortly after My Mum passed away. He does some great stuff IMO...

2 of my faves from my old man

Just started down the sketching route myself via a book titled “you can draw in 30 days”, so far I’ve been pleased with the progress and one day I might even have something worthy of sharing

I had forgotten about this thread until Ian's post alerted me.

Much of my spare time in October and November was spent creating the drawing below (not the greatest photo sadly) as a gift for a friend to give his wife for Christmas. (all hush hush until the big day)
They were both very happy with the end result, which of course, meant I was too!

Just started another project, this time back to all graphite, and 2 wheels (well 2 sets of 2 wheels!)
