... which paint would be best to give the pure white backgrounds? I would assume matt, would gloss produce shiny spots?

Is this just the crappest question ever asked? :D Thanks for any advice guys :)

is this for a studio or your living room?

An actual studio. I am converting the 2nd bedroom :)

yes this is the worst question you have asked  women are supposed to no about decorating :exit:

Matt would be the best or just put up a curtain pole up allong the wall and hag diferent fabrics off it ;)

And men are supposed to KNOW about spelling and grammar ;)

I am hanging fabrics as well, but a whole white wall would save me buying white fabric wont it? :)

make sure you paint the rest black though;)

No don't - it'll be far too depressing to have 3 walls and a ceiling black. If you're getting too much light bouncing everywhere, use black sheets against the offending walls so you can take them down after the shoot

Don't want a shot of Betty hanging from that ceiling now do we :D

good point actually dave, just curtain poles round the whole room

Wasn't sure whether you were joking or not, so said it anyway just in case

It's a good idea in principle , just doesn't work in practice

I used to have a more or less square studio, painted corner to corner black and corner to corner white - and I used to feel my mood drop when I could see nothing but black.

Having said that, black produces much better lighting control and a very good compromise is to paint the ceiling black (the ceiling being the worst offender) and have black or dark curtains that can be pulled along the walls as necessary.

Of course, the real answer is for the studio to be all white but for it to measure 25,000 sq ft and to have 40' high ceilings - best of both worlds:lol:

Thanks for the advice, but I wasnt going to paint the rest of my office black :D Ill get a blackout curtain, but nothing more :)

We had a superb studio at college that had cream walls, and that didnt affect our shots :)

you didnt just make fun of a disylexic did you betty :( you would hurt my feelings :(:(

Gah, cant watch vids at work, but thanks for the link! Will watch when I get home :)

Since you will have a dedicated studio, this might be an idea...

By the way, in addition to this video, there are many short, informative and free videos on this great website...

Just watched that and white it's good - it's a world away from what Betty and most others are trying to achieve with their space & budgets

Their studio has huge power in their lighting and something like 30ft wide by 16ft tall by 50ft length it seems - is your room at home that big Betty???

Seriously though, while it shows an ideal setup - you don't need anything like that amount of power/size to achieve good full length shots of up to 3 adults, and obviously nowhere near as much for children

My wee studio is nowhere near as elaborate, and is in fact probably just a little bigger than many home-studios are

It's always useful to see this stuff though, so please have a look and follow other links on this site too for ideas & inspiration

still no cake :(
what room are you planning on doing it in? how big is it?

Matt paint. I am a fan of limewash or distemper. Very soft white - however might not be what you had in mind.
