Looking for sympathy guys :'(

A little while back a few may recall, I had a front tooth implant/bone graft under sedation, all went well, and coupled with other work by my regular dentist was looking forward to the finish of what has been a long series of treatments.

Well that was not to be as I had to have another implant today which I decided to have done under local anaesthetic..............worst decision I have ever made.

According to the surgeon most of his patients opt for local and there should not have been any problem, but the pain was still there despite emptying four phials of anaesthetic, he has never had a patient suffer so much pain for what is now a straightforward operation..........IT WAS BLOODY EXCRUCIATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was sweating profusely, clenching my fists together, and shaking at the prospect of the drilling into my jawbone hurting again after even more anaesthetic.

The surgeon was sympathetic afterwards, explained that he had to do bone grafting as well and was at a loss to explain why it had hurt so much, he suggested it could be that the nerves that had been disturbed during an operation I had in the same region about twenty years ago.

The anaesthetic has now worn off and it is really sore, I have to eat soft food for a week:(

I hope I have made it sound painful enough because it swear word was!!, in fact I nearly swore during the operation

I know know what Dustin Hoffman would have felt in the film Running Man has it been for real!!.

I burst into tears on arriving home to Mrs G :'( and will probably cry again when I get the bill:'(

Sorry if this has been too long a post but just trying to express the suffering I went through between 3pm and 4pm. today.

KayJay, this has got to be worse pain than your behind was/is.:(

er sounds like a hug was in order
hope you received same in copious quantities

and for once - no photos - please!

You definitely have my sympathy. I had all my teeth removed under local anaesthetic - they would even offer me a general. More injections that you can possibly imagine, swelling that took literally months to go down and a diet which could only be described as... fluid until it all healed over properly....

Thanks for the hugs and sympathy guys:thumbs: just can't get the memory of the pain out of my head, four chocolate profiteroles laced with double thick cream took my mind off it for a little while:) but starting to get really sore and the stitches in the gum under my lip are uncomfortable:(.

I don't do this for just anybody Mal but here goes

Bob

Bob

Coming from you Bob that is one special hug:thankyou:, I'm told approx 4 months before I can have the crown fitted but I am going to have a temporary denture made to fill the gap...........I absolutely hate them, which is why I plumbed for the implants, I promise to wear it when I see you in July as I am not a pretty sight with a gap in the front, with my hair in a mess and chewing a bit of straw I could pass for one of those mountain hillbillies :D

That sounds awful - you have my sincere sympathies. And a virtual hug :) I hope you feel better (and pain-free) very soon.

Long story for another time but gall bladder issues are painful beyond belief and the surgery is "interesting" if you go via the long cutty slash route. The scar fades quickly though.

Not sure whether it borders on perversion but my surgeon was a keen amateur tog and took some wonderfully gruesome photos of my innards whilst I was out for the count - with my full permission of course. I printed one of his shots out and made it into a Christmas card for my mother who is a hypochondriac and she loved it! :cuckoo: No accounting for tastes :geek:

Blimey Mal....that sounds awful. I thought your tooth problems had all been sorted out a while back?

Damn, sounds nasty, at least you know its done now though. Shame he could not of given you a quick general when you realised local was not good enough, but I guess that would mean organising an anaesthetist.

Aww shucks, that is BAD news mate.
I am scared stiff of the dentist, and I really feel for you mate.

You deserve this

Sounds pretty nasty. I remember once getting a filling done without anaesthetic at all and that was terrible. I can't imagine what this would have felt like.

Yes Pat, so did I but when I went to my regular dentist for the last crown to be fitted he discovered that tooth had to be removed, that was after having 11 crowns and a 4 tooth bridge so was pretty fed up on hearing that news

I did wonder about that, he had two assistants on hand maybe none were qualified, I had not signed for sedation, and was all covered up for the procedure so might not have been practical, ethical or possibly legal at the time, just glad it is just a bad memory now:(.

I could not imagine pain like it until today:(.

Ps. what connection was the baby pic:thinking:

I'm having an implant soon. After reading this I'm now a bit worried!

I can assure you this surgeon, who is actually a maleofacial surgeon was surprised at the pain I endured, even the receptionist said she had never heard anyone in such pain before so the problem was my end and that was not because of a low pain threshold, what happened was very unusual.
If you are offered the choice between sedation or local you could opt for sedation but will cost more, the patient before me who had the same procedure under local just walked out of the surgery and casually booked her next appointment with a smile.

Cheers for the virtual hug and sympathy Allison:)

Did not sleep much last night:( I now have a swollen face which is squinting my eye although it is not as sore as it was last night.

Although I came on here looking for sympathy, giving a thought to far worse suffering of others where some would gladly swap places with me brings it all into perspective.

Thanks John, the soreness has gone, my face is still swollen on one side and having difficulty shaving, was out today and folk looking at me:(

On a lighter note I mentioned to Mrs.G that folk were looking at me and she said she was not surprised as I looked like Mr Bean with my top lip fatter than the bottom lip:lol::lol::lol:

You and Mrs G are not having a good time of late. I hope things pick up for you soon. Hope you are pain free very soon

That was a nice hug Carol, thanks.

I don't ask for much, all I want is a full set of front teeth, then I can :)

You have my sympathy mate.
I've been through something similar at the dentist and there are only 3 things I can think of that come close...

funny bone, nads and the 1d I ordered from Jessops 3 years ago, waited 2 weeks to come in to store stock then got knocked back by their finance company, now that still hurts to this day :bonk:

You poor poor thing! Here is a BIG HUG from me!

Thanks LB all the hugs and sympathy are making me feel lovely and warm inside:thankyou:

Man I feel for you, I have to have all dental work done either with no anesthetic or under general as local has no effect.

You have got me thinking, wonder if it no longer works on me now:thinking:, has it always had no effect on you.

Despite injecting what he later told me was the maximum four phials of anaesthetic my face was not that numb afterwards:suspect:

I always used to have to have a lot, for a long time my dentist thought it was me being scared of going to the dentist, until one afternoon when he spent about 3 hours trying to get my mouth numb by injecting more and more anesthetic between patients, in the end he admitted that I was not putting it on and he had given me enough to down an elephant. :D the only effect it had on me for as about the last 20 years is making me throw up and after about 4 hours my mouth goes numb for about 20 mins and that is it.

Ohh and by the way you do get used to having work done, extractions, fillings and ruptured sinuses repaired all with no anesthetic.

Dave you have got me seriously believing I am the same, the last time I had any work done on a live tooth it was one of my canines which was paired down to take one half of a bridge and I required additional doses of anaesthetic on that occasion which was painful but nowhere near as bad as the other day.

:'(
