Im confused, Ive never used uber because in Bedford we only have one or two of them and then only occassionally.

However, me and the mrs were going out the other night and I thought i'd try it given how everyone seems to say that its cheap etc etc, so what can possibly go wrong?

So, booked into town via the app, only £2.50 (usual taxis are a fiver) and paid via apple pay, lovely. After our night out, same again, £2.50, lovely.

Now though I see on my bank account that the first one was in fact £6.31 and the second £7.65?

Does anyone out there that uses uber know what has happened here? I'm guessing that its my fault but cant get my head round how I was asked to pay £2.50 when confirming the taxi but then I've had more removed from my account?

Base/booking fee is the £2.50

You then pay the journey amount (time & distance) once calculated at end of journey

I used Uber in Central London a couple of months ago. Wen input the destination, it gave me a lower and upper price £6-8. The actual price was £7.50 which was confirmed by email instantly and was what was charged to my card. No mention of any £2.50 base/booking fee.

I got my information direct from Uber so I assume it is correct

Also the base fee can vary, it is not set at £2.50

I guarantee you that you would have had a base fee to pay.

Just done some googling and digging and find that uber does indeed charge a base fee then per minute plus per mile. I wont be using it again for sure when it's more expensive than our normal taxis.

Going onto the uber site now and putting it into their fare estimator for one of the same trips the other night and it says

Base fare : £2.50
Per minute: 15p
Per mile: £1.25

I'm not saying there isn't one but it's unlikely that the £2.50 that Paul saw on the app was it. The app gives an upper and lower price and the final cost cannot be more than the upper one.

In the app if you click on the fare it will give you a fare breakdown, which will give you the base fare, minimum fare, cost per min/mile

Just tried it (to my local Tesco), got:

Fare.....£4-5
Capacity....1-4
Estimated Arrival...14:38
Per Minute Wait Time...20p

Edit: That was on the app. Just tried it on the website and it does indeed give a base fare of £1.60. Given Paul originally used the app, it still doesn't explain why he got £2.50 wen booking.

@fabs are you signed into the app or just in the fare estimator?
I just did a search for a journey in your area and the above is what it returned.

This works in both the Android app and the Apple app

Ok, I see that now but still doesn't explain Pauls original confusion as he would have had to tap the actual Fare twice to see the base fare so why would he think that's the actual fare?

Because I didnt see the tiny i beside that, i simply clicked done at the bottom which is when the 2.50 came up so just thought that uber really is as cheap as people say it is :-/

If it seems to cheap to be true, it generally is. ;)

To be fair, I did 3 trips with Uber in London that day totalling an hour in journeys costing £23. I doubt a black cab would have ben anywhere near as cheap so I'd say they're certainly cheap in London (and possibly other cities) but not so much elsewhere.

Nail and head

Where there are lot's of Ubers there you will also find good price competition.

Were there are few Ubers then the price is not so competitive.
