Over-70s could get booster Covid jab from September -

Wonder if they will do the same as with the flu jab and allow younger people to purchase,
I've never had a flu jab yet and not had flu for as long as I can remember

It has been previously mentioned that the vaccine development is a rolling program. But at the moment it seems that there is(only just) sufficient manufacturing capacity for the current versions of the vaccines. So as for the need and/availablity of a booster......watch this space?

what is the booster jab for exactly ?

To increase protection.

sorry i didnt put it very well ,,,,by booster jab do they mean a second one ?

It's being called a booster, but really it's to immunise for additional variants of the virus that the original may be less effective against.

so basically a third stabby then .

That's how I read it. Like the annual 'flu jab for those of us who have it. At this rate, we might as well have a permanent line in (and/or out!) inserted!!! :)

I get the feeling it will be free for the next few years

Yes, and I expect if the need presents itself there will more boosters as and when further dangerous variants appear. The wonders of evolution.

We are used to annual flu shots. This may become something similar, perhaps even in a combined vaccination to protect us from all nasty respiratory viruses. Current flu vaccines already protect against three or four different viruses, and are reformulated every year.

yep the variants will ramp up in Europe of the next few months.
the next round of covid will be much more violent than the first couple we have had
kent, brazilian these need to be in the next vaccine and the gov know it needs to in fast
so all those muppets that want a holiday wont bring it back and kill nanna that thinks she is safe because she had that astra zenaca

I heard that after all the research etc., that goes into establishing a successful vaccine it is comparatively ‘easy’ to modify it in response to variations of the virus.

It may be comparatively easy to make the mod. The tricky bit is likely regulatory approval getting it accepted to use.

Not sure how many new 'flu vaccines there are each year. I know that the variants included in each year's 'flu jab change from year to year but how many brand new variants are in the formulation?

There's an annual reformulation for the flu season in each hemisphere. Typically one or both of the two Influenza A strains included are different to the previous year; the Influenza B strains in the cocktail change less frequently. Flu strains can vary substantially, much more so than the SARS-CoV-2 variants we've seen to date (which most virologists would probably regard as belonging to the same major strain).
