It's being called a booster, but really it's to immunise for additional variants of the virus that the original may be less effective against.
I heard that after all the research etc., that goes into establishing a successful vaccine it is comparatively ‘easy’ to modify it in response to variations of the virus.
There's an annual reformulation for the flu season in each hemisphere. Typically one or both of the two Influenza A strains included are different to the previous year; the Influenza B strains in the cocktail change less frequently. Flu strains can vary substantially, much more so than the SARS-CoV-2 variants we've seen to date (which most virologists would probably regard as belonging to the same major strain).Not sure how many new 'flu vaccines there are each year. I know that the variants included in each year's 'flu jab change from year to year but how many brand new variants are in the formulation?
