After watching lots of videos Iv decided to buy a light meter and going to start by buying one light with battery for location work as I have studio lights already a 300&600 lencarter set.

The question is do I go for 400watt or 600watt strobe and where is the best place to buy it from also need to buy modifiers for it

Look forward to your suggestions

Ps I'm not made of money he he but £300 ish as a starting price may be

You haven't said what kind of location work you want to do,
Or what type of modifiers you think you'll want to use
Or whether you'll be using it to overpower the sun, or just for fill.

It's difficult to give a useful answer without knowing these things...

Taking photographs in open sun light and shade I will probably want to over power the sun at some point

As for modifiers a grid and beauty dish along with small softbox

I'll be taking photos in parks and wood areas

Can I not just buy a battery for my 300 and 600 that I already have from you Gary ?

You could go down that route, but you also need to think about portability. Are you going to be able to move your gear from vehicle to location easily, especially if you have to leave your vehicle some distance from the actual area you'll be shooting in? This is one problem that tends to bug me.

Two mono heads and a battery is a fair weight, especially when looking at some of the battery packs out there such as the Tronix Explorer XT. And of coures, you need to think about the number of pops you will get from that battery, because most seem to be around the 350 mark. That figure tends to be related to full power output from the head which we tend not to use all the time, but as soon as you start overpowering the ambient light, you find your head output at the top of the scale and the battery life shrinking rapidly.

If portability isn't absolutely essential or you will have someone to help you carry the gear, and you know your shoot isn't going to last long enough to deplete the battery, than this is probably your cheaper option.

For me, I needed high portability and good output, so it had to be the Safari, and once available, I'll be adding their Discovery kit to my armoury too.
