anyone else having problems

Yes, Outlook was rolled out a good while ago - can't remember when. It does look a bit different to Hotmail (which I used before Outlook came along) but I've not had any problems.

I hated it when it changed ages ago, no longer use it.

Sorted it now ta ,but still don't like it

I've not yet had any issues with it.
Better the G.

I guess I'm old skool, I never got used to using the web mail interfaces. I've got my own domains and just use an IMAP client to access them on all my devices. Find that so much each than my perceived lock-in by 'free' online mail providers.

I've used Microsoft Outlook for years and years in my office so if it's the same one it's fine. Does what it's supposed to do. If not i'll shut up !! haha

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on this topic

I have been using microsoft office 2007 outlook for years - but over the past few months friends who have Hotmail address can not receive e mails from me - all other friends with differing address no problem
This is the reply I receive:-

This is the mail system at host know-smtprelay-3-imp.

I am sorry to have to inform you that your message, "??", could not be delivered to .*******hotmail

The remote mail system said;

550:Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable

The original message is attached.

Any help/advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Sounds like an issue with our SMTP gateway opposed to Outlook. Who are you using for outgoing SMTP? Is it Virgin Media by anychange, based on looking up know-smtprelay-3-imp.

Thanks for your replies

Hi Neil
mailbox unavailable = address is incorrect normally.

does your auto complete entry have the wrong address?

Checked address and they are right - just noticed I have four friends with hotmail - one is ok other three have my e mails returned

Hi dejongj

Yes I'm with Virgin media

Computer literate not!! - haven't a clue what SMTP gateway is!!!

i've had my hotmail since 1997?
I had Hotmail before Microsoft bought it!

I still have it and GMail but I have my own domains for business and personal use.

My Compuserve and AOL accounts are long gone.

Not had issues with any of them.

at one point i had my real first name / surname but for some reason let it lapse.. in hindsite that was a bad idea :D
Still have first and surname! And yes Hugh.Jarse@^^^^^^ exists too.

SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Basically think of it as the sorting office. When you send mail from your local computer on your local network it will for most people first go through the sorting office from their local ISP (Internet Service Provider). The message your are getting from know-smtprelay-3-imp is basically your ISP saying that they do not know the destination, and that they do not know which sorting office they have to pass the message to next.

If your email address is one provided by your ISP then unfortunately you will have to use their SMTP gateway (sorting office) as the first call. However if your email address isn't one of your ISP I would use the SMTP address for sending mail from who ever is providing you with your mailserver. Then use those details and enter them in your mail client. I find that much more reliable than using the ISP as a gateway.

I hope that makes sense; in simple terms - if your email address belongs to VirginMedia you are stuffed :( however if your email address belongs to someone else use their SMTP details in your mail client

The issues I have with them isn't necessarily the providers themselves, but how they are often blocked from corporate networks to access them. And back in the original days very few of them supported proper IMAP, and forget about even thinking they would support CalDav and CardDav protocols. But of all of them today, I prefer outlook.com and for special occasions my only web based mail is with protonmail.ch. Got un ultrashort email name as well :)

I'd thought this thread might be about outlook 365. That's a very unhappy application to have to use after real outlook.

Regarding ISPs and email, EE/Orange/wanadoo/Tiscali require ALL outgoing email to go through their mail server, which makes for a modest amount of frustration if you use a laptop and travel - inevitably one forgets to switch accounts to send from, and it only becomes obvious when Outlook is closed and tells you that there are Xmany emails waiting to go.
