Can anyone recommend an outdoor camera, must have motion sensor and be battery operated. I've been googling and found this www.toolstation.com/shop/p92129?utm_source=feed&utm_medium=googleshopping&utm_campaign=googleshopping&mkwid=TDoS6qn9&pcrid=25046328263&gclid=CMaRk9-D8boCFWcTwwodJ0MAvQ but wondered if anyone had any recommendations. I'd like something for less than £100. It's to pop outside to capture whatever wildlife wanders past. The range on the link is only 10m, would like a longer range but the budget is pretty much set as i'd just like to have one out of pure nosiness.

I don't know that particular model but there are not many similar cameras for less than £100. Lidl sometimes have one on offer for a little less than the one you have linked to but I don't think there any offers at present. The one we used is a different make but the principle is the same. They use a passive infrared sensors (PIR) to detect a change in the infrared radiation in their field of view and when that happens the camera is switched on.

The following refers to the one camera I've used, others may be different

The good points -

works, picked up mice, birds, foxes, pine martens and badgers on ours,
small and easily located, though see the bad points below,
sensitive enough to detect mice and, as it is looking at heat changes, not affected by leaves and branches moving.

The bad points

ordinary NiMH batteries need recharging about every two or three days,
the sensor's detection field seems very much a horizontal band so animals above or below where the camera is pointed may be missed,
at night the red lights that illuminate the scene can bleach out an animal if it is very close the camera.
the strap to attach it to a tree/post is often not that useful - doesn't always point in the right direction so we found an old tripod is more useful.

You are not going to get any prizes for the quality of the videos but they are easily good enough to identify individual animals and it is interesting to see what is about. Here is a short video from our camera.

Thanks Dave. That quality is fine with me. It's purely just out of interest. I've been looking at the Acorn 5210 which also looks decent but seems to have an issue with fakes. I thought about getting one before but decided I had better uses for money. This morning I spotted a bird of prey in the garden but by the time I grabbed my camera it was gone, then 10 mins later I saw a fox walk through our field with a deer following about 30m behind, which seemed odd. I know the camera won't capture that sort of thing but it's got me wondering what all is in my back garden and field. Not seen a fox here for a while, I assume that relates to my neighbours chickens, they had 3, then 2 and last week I only spotted 1.

What mobel do you have?

Our camera is a Bushnell model 119446. It is a couple of years old now but within its limitations it does its job.

Thanks, going to try and decide tonight and get one ordered.

Thought I'd try Aldi as I searched for the lidl one and saw Aldi did one too. Just picked one up for £80 and can try it out in the garden tonight.
