Hello lighting experts, I need your help! :D

At the moment, I'm mainly shooting live music, but I've set myself a goal next year of shooting much more portrait music stuff. Here's where you come in, what's the best way to light bands?

At the moment I'm just using two flashes, one on either side, but know very little about lighting really so any help/advice would be appreciated :D

I'm happy to spend money on equipment btw :)

always love your stuff on stage. vibrant, clear and pin sharp.
band portraits though...what kind of bands? studio shoot? urban shoot etc?
rock bands will want something quite different to a smoochy tennie bopper singer

Thanks guys :)

I'm not really limiting my the self to any genre's, but most of the shoots will be on location, anything from fields, alleyways, etc whatever suits the band. If anyone could help on what equipment is best used for this it would be appreciated :)

Have a look for a chap called Zack Arias. He's a US based photographer who shoots a lot of music stuff. His one light DVD is brilliant.

It's probably more important that you understand the principles before making any large capital investment and belive me pro lighting setups for outdoors can easily run to several £K.

You can certainly get started with a couple of flashguns though and learning how to zoom them and modify the output will be what you need to know. Snoots, grids, how to underexpose a background while keeping the subject well lit. It's all fun stuff to learn :)

Strobist is another really good resource as is youtube for lighting tuition.

I usually bring one assistant with me, but have another I sometimes use too so could bring both if needed. Keep the help coming people :)
